There are many different kind of Pokeys throughout the Mushroom Kingdom and the entire Mario universe, and one of them is the Toothy. First debuting in the game Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story.

Most Pokeys have a simple body plan. A round head that lays on top of their segmented body. What their segments look like depends on their habitat. These ones hang around the dental beach that is known as Plaque Beach, hence why the Toothys resemble teeth.

Research has led people to believe that the first Toothys came when Pokeys were introduced to the tropical climates. These invasive Pokeys soon begin to have a body change as they breathed into the minty breeze that came from Plaque Beach and gained a white colored and ditched their spikes for a two-pointed crown shape at the tip of their segments. From there, the Toothy species was brought into the world.

Like real teeth, Toothys will need to regularly brush and clean themselves to keep their bodies fresh and shiny. Pearly white is the cleanse they aim for, so they will wander around the sands in search of comb trees that they can rub themselves against and then dip themselves into the mouthwash lakes. Sometimes when a Toothy can’t keep itself clean, nasty viruses might try to jump into their mouths. Upon the virus entering their mouth, the Toothy seems fine at first, but in actuality the virus is working to rot its body from the inside. The viruses can be considered a natural predator for the Toothy species as the very act of the Virus inhabiting their mouths can sicken and rot them if the Toothy dosen't spit them out in time.

Toothys can’t seem to stand getting cavities even if it’s just a little one, so they will push other members of their species into getting washed up or outright force them into bathing if the rotting is so bad that it might endanger their health. After a few months of living out their lives, a segment will start to fall off of them as a new one will grow from below them. Sometimes when they can’t grow back their tooth segment, they will scavenge for fresh and small tooths that they can fit onto their bodies like hermit crabs do when looking for shells.
