Appledusk did nothing to abuse Mapleshade or Reedshine. Every inaction with Mapleshade before the flood was nothing but kind. And there was plenty of quotes to prove he loved all his kits. The only time he was angry with Mapleshade, it was completely justified because she recklessly got their kits killed. Even then he never insulted or hit her. Later in the book, he refused to fight despite Mapleshade despite her: threatening him, attacking his apprentice Perchpaw and trespassing.  He saved all his family. He saved Mapleshade from the flood and attampt to do the same with his kits. He sacrificed his life to save a pregnant Reedshine from Mapleshade. 

And having more then mate is normal for cats in the Warriors Series: Whitestorm, Brindleface, Willowpelt, Goldenflower, Crowfeather, Dovewing, etc. All had mates at the same time. Also, all forbidden mates has used/lied to someone else to protect their half-clan kits: Bluestar/Thrushpelt, Dovewing/Bumblestripe, Leafpool/Squirrelflight, Crowfeather/Nightcloud, Oakheart/Greypool, Yellowfang/Lizardstripe etc.
 
Even Mapleshade herself posed as Birchface's mate, without ever asking Appledusk. Ingoring the fact, it Birchface's death an unintended accident on Appledusk's part. He already has enough on his guilty coincidence without his own kits thinking he's nothing but their "father's killer". Even worse, Mapleshade is allowing Frecklwwish/Oakstar to rasie her kits into wanting to kill their own father.
