Well, think about it for a second, Thomas brought the coal truck to the top of Muffle Mountain and if he didn't "accidentally" leave it behind, then Burnett wouldn't have been able to make Lady steam.
Add to that, him helping her escape from Diesel 10 and calling her beautiful.
