I tell you, it took a bit of getting used to the look, especially as stills. In the trailer, the look works (for me, anyway)

whoo awesome! The riddler was always my sec fav villain..though I suppose Catwoman's not really a total villain in that case he IS my fav. I can't wait for the movie. Great job on the atmosphere and face!

Cheers. I have to say that Poison Ivy would be my second fave followed by scarecrow and Two Face, but only because I've not be exposed to enough of the Riddler's exploits.
Catwoman is different. Appropriately enough she's independent from the other villianous characters just in her attitude alone. She's not a killer, whilst the other's would have no qualms in murdering someone. And of course, obviously likes cats

That is the reflection from the blade. It had to be on the shadowy part of his face so it could be seen. Lots of artistic license in this one

the only thing i hate about this version of the joker, (not ur painting, i mean, in the movie) is that no deep storyline as of yet. rumor is he's just gonna get mugged real bad and go crazy...come on now! i can do better than that! what are your thoughts?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
sullen-skrewt In reply to ArtfullyAwkward [2008-01-08 14:00:32 +0000 UTC]
Eeek, I sincerely hope that is just rumor! I thought that there wasn't going to be a backstory to the Joker. Nolan said something about the Joker being an absolute, and I took it that he would arrive and cause mayhem without explanation to why he's like he is. I'm not sure how many Joker origins have been in the comics, but I always liked the idead in the Killing Joke - Not the backstory about his pregnant girlfriend dying, but the very telling line he says in it - 'If I have to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice'. This to me shows exactly how insane he is and that his past is a mystery even to him. I'm not sure if any explanation will be good enough to give excuse to the Joker's madness, but I'm sure as hell that one bad mugging couldn't possibly be enough to create the monster. But there's also the absence (maybe?) of the permawhite. Can one brutal scar across the gob tip the balance? I don't think so.
Right there's my overlong thoughts on the subject. Sorry about the ramble. What backstory do you prefer, or do you have ideas on what could possibly send the man over the edge.

yeah, i really see what you're saying and i agree with your vision alot. when i found about the whole mugging scenario, i was so mad! give me chemicals! give me the red hood! just dont give me something that has happened to my cousins! lol. and maybe the police or gordon can TALK ABOUT his back story; saying we believe this may or may not have happened...all we know for sure is this guy is fucking nuts! that would even be better! but i refuse to believe some guy gets beat up, dyes his hair green and doesnt even do a good face paint job! joker is so near and dear to me. i hope they dont bastardize him...just how they killed off the hulk...oy!

When pictures of Heath's Joker emerged, I was stunned to see he wasn't permawhite. Now I don't know what Nolan's got up his sleeve and whether he'll be bleached later on, but to be honest, I've got used to the look. Hell, it may not be canon Joker on the outside, but it's what's inside that counts If he's as brutal and psychopatic on screen as he is in the comics, I will be rather pleased

you noticed that too eh? yeah, that REALLY bothered me! I even went as far as say to my friend, "if they don't drop his ass in chemicals or do something to make his skin turn permanent joker white....I RIOT!" but yeah, im getting used to it also. i just dont care for his hair. it doesnt look green enough or joker green or something is off to me. i like how its all dirty and wild; i dont think a man like joker would give a shit if his hair was combed but im used to him having shorter hair. but ill get over it. yeah, i hope they make him so insane and ruthless...to the point where he wouldnt even care about his saftey...it'll be so rewarding and worth the wait! did u know theyre also making it where 2 face wont be scarred either? he's just gonna be bipolar or something. again, please mr. nolan, fix that...

sullen-skrewt In reply to ArtfullyAwkward [2008-01-10 00:51:19 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I agree his hair needs to be greener (that's why I try to add a healthy shade of green in the paintings) Hey, artistic license is a GOOD thing.
Totally with you on his messiness. I noticed in the Empire pic that he had some quality "custom" clothing on including the waistcoat which was missing a button. I love that - A button short of a full set
Whaaaat?!!! Two face must be scarred. It's all very well trying to achieve realism without gimmicks, however, the unique look of the characters is part of what has made them so popular for decades and besides which, how can you waft away the incredible looks of the characters when the main one is an adult male who chooses to dress as a bat?!
The Joker, although seemingly not permawhite, looks like a clown. So, even though it's a different interpretation, it's still resting on the canon foundations. Two Face without scarring would just be trying to fix something that isn't broke and you'll get a lot of pissed off Batfans howling about it too

I'm inept at doing everything else I pretty much want to use my art to make money, however that is just not happening at the moment. For now, it's nice to have online friends with similar interests. Also, seeing other peoples work is food for the imagination.
Messy on the outside, messy on the inside. I think that Dent will need to be physically extraordinary to compete with other popular characters. And if he doesn't have his scarring what happens to the coin? Does he even use it?
You also bring up an excellent point about the fans identifying with the character. People go on about a film bringing in the masses regardless but it's the fans who keep the franchise going. To draw in a fan with a different viewpoint of a character is one thing, but to change something completely as so to make the link to a character so completely blurred is another thing entirely.

that's why i got into art in the first place: to turn things into healthier shades of green. well, actually, i was watching this movie, and one of the characters says that, statistically, the number one reason people get into art or take it up is because they fell inept somehow; unattractive or not special enough...so they basically use art to get attention or to have people notice them, talk to them; to speak through...and i thought, "holy shit, that makes alot of sense!" lol.
see? a messy joker is a good joker. plus, everything about him should be some kind of twisted joke. just like you said, " a button short of a full set". you make a clever point: we can believe a man will dress like a bat and learn karate and live alone with an old man for the rest of his life....but harvey dent cant have acid thrown in his face by boss maroni? and yes, again, thats how we, as fans, identify with the character.

I am torn between 'sexy' and 'OMG killer psycho RUN!!!' It's rather perplexing ;D
I love the way that you painted the hair. It's kinda a shame that the knife is somewhat lost within the shadows, but that could be as much the scanner/cameras' fault. Maybe one or two extreme highlights on the edge would help? His eyes and smile are frighteningly effective, this is one heck of a moody painting

You're not the only one whose torn by his psycho sexiness
I agree about the knife. Part of it was the scanners fault. I had to clip some of the side of the blade off because I had to scan it half at a time (and they never seem to match up) but a lot of it was just me being a bit lazy with it. I really should have looked up references but I'm soooo godamn lazy.
Cheers

I'm sure that was the one where she is enlisted by Batman to help find the Joker. She also has a singing spot in it with a very funny song. Sample lyric: 'You used to be so placcid, would you PLEASE put down that acid, and say that we're sweethearts agaaaaaain'
Sorry about that, my singing voice is terrible
