The sharpness of the train-crossing and having the moon in the frame are some of the little touches that make this so stunning.

Thank you much. This shot was kinda like a "whatever, nothing good will come of this" as I had very little time to react and set up the camera.

i think thats geat, long expsures can be tricky but you have done it very well.. id love some pointers, anything in general would be awesome really.

Well, I'd say this from experience.

With long exposures, I've seen that using f/5 through f/11 works best most time exposure shots. Try to use a low ISO if possible. 100 or 200. $00 should be as high as you go, as 800 or higher will noise up your shot and possible ruin it or wash it out.

Sometimes to at night shooting with a cold color temperature (like done with this shot) will give you all kinds of interesting blues and such.

Best piece of advice I can give though would be to play and experiment with all kinds of different ideas. That's how I learned it for the most part.

Any other questions, please feel free to ask. I'll answer them the best I can or direct you to who can.

Wow this is awesome. I really love the idea and the way you excecuted it!

Is this a digital or film camera? I just got myself a digital camera and really would love to take pics like this at night, but I'm still learning the techniques. What was your shutter speed and aperture? Sorry I'm just trying to learn, I'd love to do a piece like this at night!

Not a problem. It's all about experimentation.

I shot this at:
Focal: 18mm on a Vivitar 18-35mm wide lens
Time: 12 seconds
Aperture: f/11
ISO: 100

Yeah the 7D is a digital, but if I had been shooting for more then a minute for this shot, I would have preferred a film camera because you don't get digital noise and CCD Burn In's.

Thanks much for the words, and good luck playing with the idea. Feel free to ask a question any time.

Yeah I've been playing around with it a bit. I'm still trying to figure out how to get the aperture what I want. I just had a question, it may seem silly, but like I said I just got into Digital Photography.. what does ISO speed mean? and what about focal? Thank you again so much for your time and patience.

All ISO means is sensitivity. On film, ISO was measures by the size of the Silver-Bromide crystals that absorbed the light. The larger the crystals, the faster light was absorbed, but also the more grain that showed up in the image. I like to shoot at ISO 100-400 most. Less noticeable grain. Don't let people try to convince you that shooting at ISO 800 or higher is better because it has a larger number. That's the first clue they have no idea what they are talking about. All ISO means is how sensitive your cameras digital sensor or film can capture light.

And one thing to keep in mind a bout aperture. The smaller the f/stop the more light being allowed into the camera. on my 57-300mm telephoto lens, the smallest aperture is f/4.5 and the highest is f/22 when at 75mm and f/5.6 to f/32 when at 300mm.

I'm hoping I'm not confusing you. HAHA! Same as before though, feel free to contact for any questions.

Ahhh, thank you so much! I won't lie, it is all a little confusing, but I think I understand it better now! I took a film photography class this year, so atleast I know a bit about apertures and such, but I haven't used any sort of camera in months so I definately needed a refreshing. I'll have to play around with my camera a little later. I think I have to adjust the aperture through the menu somehow, and not manually, like how it was with my film camera.. and I think thats why I'm getting confused. But I'll figure it out.

Thanks so much

Nah! Friend of mine has a D50. When flipped into manual mode, shutter time and f/stop are all adjusted by the rings on the front and back of the camera. if you want, you can ask him yourself, as he is really familiar with it. ~turbokeith

Glad you like it! When shooting this, I didn't know if this would be a complete waste of my time and wash out or if I would get what I wanted.

Luckly it worked as that was one of the last trains of the night

Again, thanks for the comment!

great capture
really like how all the light(s) look
nice long exposer of the train as well, looks like a good capture with the satuation you got out of it
did you do it in differnt test exposers or did you go with a certine time (like did set the camera to bulb and do 5 secounds, 10 secounds, 15 secounds, and so on) or did you just guess with a time and take it and run with it?
lovely capture +fav

sullivan1985 In reply to feni0x [2006-05-04 17:30:31 +0000 UTC]

This was shot in bulb, because I didn't want the camera to be on a programed time that was to long. If that happened, cars would have started driving by and would have ruined it!

Thanks much for the comment!
