Description OK..you simply have to look at this one full scale, or you miss the point. It was taken at the ruins of the ancient city of Ayuthaya in Thailand. The Burmese sacked the entire city well over 200 hundred years ago. They chopped off the heads of many of the stone Buddha figures in the city, searching for the golden Buddhas that were sometimes to be found inside..an attempt by the Thais to hide these great treasures. The vast amount of gold that the Burmese found was carted back to Rangoon, where it still covers the huge pagoda that towers over that city. The Thais of the once great Ayuthaya kingdom were either killed, or taken away as slaves. The Buddhas without heads, and sometimes without arms..stand, and sometimes are strewn, all but forgotten amidst the fabulous ruins of what was once one of the world's great cities. It really stirs the emotions to see it first hand, and I'm trying to convey a bit of that here. This particular Buddha head somehow ended up against an ancient wall of the city, with a tree growing all around it and around the brick wall..the tree seeming to almost cradle the head in it's hands. I couldn't stop looking at it. But there is something I had not previously noticed until I began preparing this photo for posting...take a really close look at the eyes. I absolutely did not do anything at all to them with the software. Yes..this is a very, very spiritual place.

w...wow. speachless. Buddah has been crying. Is that another buddah in the background on the right side? thanks for commenting my page and drawing me back to view your full gallery. It was worth the trip. I found more to favorite here!

BTW ... this would make a very dramatic gallery piece if you crop it tall and skinny with just the tree buddha's head is in. This adds drama and makes it about the buddha head and not about the mess of trees around it with a Buddha head in the middle (nothing wrong with the trees OR the original ... don't get me wrong!! just another perspective) ...anyway, clean lines and a clear subject ... I'm thinking "Buddha's Tears" ? I'm thinking you're gonna be rich!! Did you know that buddah has a fat belly because he's full of the good fortune he represents? Or is often hodling up gold coins. Insight from my Chinese friend Weiguo who brought me back a fat Buddah ... therefore Buddha WANTS you to profit from his head ... see?

Thanks for the nice comment, but I do want to tell you that the Buddha head really has the tree growing around it like that..that's not manipulated.

Wonderful.
Nature embracing art.
The tree has not crushed the statue but probably rather protected it.
I love this very much!

Amazing photo...it seems that the eyes are looking right at the viewer. It's wild how the trees cradle the head as they grew around it. Glad you posted it for all to see, too.

What an incredible photograph!! Unbelievably eerie ... the story is great ... thx for taking the time to explain it. My first thought was exactly that of khog's above -- it reminded me of the tres in the Wizard of Oz! Nice shot Mark

The brown and white tones, and the textures in this are wonderful. I love your accompanying story. It must have been have been a tremendous sensation to witness firsthand the remains of destruction of a site holding much meaning to an ancient people. Sadly, people, ancient or modern, have always seemed eager to destroy things of value to others.
That Buddah appears to have two sets of eyes, each looking a different direction. Is that what you see in this? What an amazing thing - wonder what the story is behind it.
Another superb capture. One that definitely moves anyone looking at it.
Thanks for sharing it.

Cripes.......This looks like an amazing little place. It's awesome how the tree has covered this head. The eyes both appear to be looking at the viewer, and who knows, maybe they really are!! It's a fantastic image Mark, I almost expect the tree to come to life and start talkin like an 'Ent'
Brilliant description...

eep...my gawd...that is just weird! I'd stand there and gawk at it for a while. You don't see this everyday.

about looking for something in the eyes you said...what am I suppose to see??? I looked hard...and the only thing I could really see that you could have meant was part of the lil root seems to be growing out of it? The left eye? Help me here. *L* OR is it that the eyes will follow you?

Stunning!
~realizes she has been holding her breath and slowly inhales~

The eyes are most definately alive. Just as the eyes on the 'Mona Lisa'.
I had to get up and walk around just to see for sure. Gorgeous!
Then the image of a circle around the farthest eye almost looking as if a magnifying glass was held there...as well as the eyes' appearance of refraction. Or the image of the whisp of 'smoke' that is rising from the iris of the other{right} eye.
There is soo much activity in that photo alone. I could only imagine feeling each moment, standing amongst such blatent divine tragedy.
Even with first glance there are other faces seen in the tree roots surrounding the Buddah's head.
Again.......just stunning!

definately going on my
