Description Barrus atuin

Average size: up to 5 m in height and 8 m in lenght.
Habitat: eastern forests and parts of the swamps with hard enough soil.
Danger level: low (though it can kill anybody with ease).

Lifestyle: barras live in herds of 10-15 individuals, but not in compact groups - they`re usually are on a considerable distance from each other, gathering together only for reproduction. Most of the time they communicate by sounds transferred through the ground. vibrations of the soil also help barras to determine its reliability - their massive bodies are hard to pull out of a quagmire.
Barras use their huge arms gather soft plant matter (leaves, fruits, algae) they eat.
Young barras grow very fast and become self-dependent very early.
Being more amphibious than most land vertebrates, barra needs to moisten its skin regularly.
Sometimes barras can drastically alter their habitat and behaviour.

Features: barra is one of the biggest (though not THE biggest) vertebrates known to jadongs. Its hide is covered in countless extensions that intensify its dermal respiration and at the same time act as a camouflage - one can easily confuse a barra with a small grassy hill from afar. It also helps that barra can change skin color restrictedly.
Barra has five pairs of gills because such a massive body needs a lot of oxygen (which swamp aren`t rich in). Its feet have soft pads to distribute the load better, so it actually stands on its fingertips. Hands are quite flexible and can lift a lod of several centners effortlessly. Radars are atrophied, but similar receptors cover the underside of barra`s neck and the tip of its muzzle.
Barra has very good ears and much worse eyes that are colorblind, but useful in the darkness.

Other:
being too powerful for a jadong, barra can`t be a totem animal. Yet there`s a legend that Mellith An-Ganzalt, a gerat ruler and hero, managed to do that, gaining the ability to alter the world by his wish. Since then, many tried to do that but nobody succeeded.
A whole mythology and cosmogony was created about this gigantic creature. The word "Ambarra" itself means "On the barra" - many jadongs believe that their world is placed on the back of a barra (similar to some of our myths), and even that any barra bears a world on its back, interpreting conformably its skin extensions (as trees), mud coating, water streamlets runnung down its hide, and numerous parasites.
Barra was sacralized and never domesticated (mere thought of that is sometimes considered a punishable heresy).
Anyhow, in spite of all its mystique, this swamp titan played a role in jadongs`life no less than any other animal.

Similar species: unknown.
