Description
Scutrasaurus magnus (here) and about 30 other species.Max size of up to 3 m long and over 100 kg.
Turamabises are a group of semiaquatic semi-reptilians dwelling near lakes in the swampy jungle, where the air humidity is maximal but the ground is firm enough.
Their most notable feature is the structure of the gills, which are transformed into fans lying in open bowls instead of closed gill-sacks. It`s the bowls` interior that performs gas exchange, while the former gills serve only to ventilate it by flapping. It`s hard to say if this is a relict transitional form or a brand new evolutionary experiment.
While sense acuity may vary significantly between species, all of them possess excellent olfaction, highly sensitive to air composition, humidity and other parameters.
They live from 3 to 30 years, are cold-blooded and sluggish, and take up low to middle levels of the food pyramid. There herbivores, carnivores, scavengers and even filter-feeders among them. Three species are dangerous to jadongs, but not hard to repel.
The long neck of a turamabis has plenty of space for an aspirator, but it has to transfer food very quickly or it`ll weigh it down, so the mastication is not very effective.
Various species may be social or solitary. Their main weapon is a strong tail, but some of them possess horn, poisonous spikes, or subdermal armor.
All turamabis species lay few large eggs with hard camouflaged shells, which often bear soft conical spikes that harden after laying. Most species build primitive nest at the lake bottom or sandy shore, but five of them use abandoned burrows and another one is a brood parasite. The aquatic larvae have rather advanced lobed gills and no scales. Social species exhibit parental care.
Large turamabises have mating rituals such as symbolic fights, while smaller ones sing peculiar songs.
Certain swamp tribes hunt these animals for skin and bones. They may use specific names for different species, but at the same time refer to very dissimilar ones with a common word that denotes health status, size, or some other characteristic.
