Description
Alright, the last of these freaks for now...The ~vorinde
Vitrobot astramuratus
Up to 4 m tall with similar carapace width, but pretty compact with its legs folded.
This animal dwelling in distant mountains and plateaus is so bizarre that it`s often mistaken for some sort of relict robot left by Masters (it`s not, but those are definitely a thing). Its leg armor just naturally looks like some mechanical parts - it allows the animal to fixate its legs in a given position. It`s also very hard and sharp. The tiny scales refract the light in a way that makes them look like blue or green glass with a pink tint. The upper side of a massive star-shaped carapace imitates a nondescript patch of dirt and rocks, while its lower side is one giant radar organ. This giant star is supported by extensions of ribs and vertebrae that form a basket similar to a galerid skeleton. Five large spiracles are located on the sides.
The lifespan of this animal is unknown (estimated at 50-70 years). It can maintain its body temperature somewhat, but isn`t really warm-blooded. The ~vorinde spends the night hidden under its camouflaged shell in some gorge or gully, coming out at midday to hunt. What it hides from is unknown, as its environment has no larger predators such as whesgwhyres.
This weirdo hardly looks like an apex predator itself, but that`s exactly what it is - its three-meter-long arms strike lightning-fast and at surprising angles. ~vorinde relies mostly on external digestion when eating meat, but employs its aspirator to chew on some vegetation occasionally.
They are solitary and highly territorial, slowly patrolling the territory around their sleeping place every day. It views any intruding creature as potential food and is always waiting to strike, but rarely approaches first.
Their reproductive habits are known from indirect evidence, such as brown, stony-looking eggshell fragments. Every few years the ~vorinde (which is presumably ambisexual) find a suitable little cave at the border of its territory, leaving up to 8 large, spherical, water-filled eggs. Another individual somehow fertilizes those and covers up the nest entrance. When hatching, egg water fills the cave (the floor of whcih may be covered in some sort of watertight sealant) to produce a pond for the larvae, which also attracts various invertebrate prey. Nobody has yet observed the larvae and their ontogeny.
The creature`s name begins with a sound like a ring or crunch of breaking metal. ~vorindes have only been encountered in a few long-distance expeditions, to which they have proven to be a significant threat, so information on them is pretty scarce.
