Description Field Guide:
Wächter (Guardian)

The Wächter is a species of dragon that are bred by the Woodland Elves to be guardians of the Elven Realms. Small in stature but tenacious in battle and loyal to the death, these golden dragons are sometimes even given as gifts to humans whom the elves deem worthy.

In this illustration:
While visiting with the Desboison Elves I witnessed a very touching moment. I observed an battle weary Wächter being comforted by an old friend. The elf wept as she whispered prayers to ease the old Wächter's suffering, as he rested his head on the her lap until he died. I learned that the young elf's name was Vhimal and that together with her father had raised and trained the Wächter.

Very creative...but Darn! Why'd you have to kill the poor dragon?!

thanks. in a story line i am developing the Vormund are a breed of dragon bred and raised to be guardians of the elf realms. i wanted to show that they are not just nameless and uncared about warriors but beloved companions. and when one dies it's loss is felt

I gotta say this is one of your best! The concept, emotions, story, details come together to make a perfectly harmonized picture. And to top it all: we can all relate to it, which brings it one step above all the others. An EXCELLENT work of art. Great job!

Fab design on these critters! You've really captured the sense of weight and power in those compact, powerful fore-limbs.

Sorry I didn't elaborate too well, but you have so much emotion in your works, and its nice to see someone who mainly works with pencils doing such amazing work as opposed to everything else nowadays being done digitaly.

Sumo0172 In reply to aaron33030 [2012-03-21 03:24:51 +0000 UTC]

well thank you again. capturing emotion came from doing portraits when i was younger. and my decision to just work in pencils is a... simply put controversial one. my recommendation, if you get the chance to work in digital i say go for it. although you become just another in the pack you have a better chance at regular money and work

I'm going to college (hopefully) to become a better artist and I'm almost positive I'll be taught to use digital media, but I'm glad to start with pencils and it makes me very happy to see someone so good with pencils

Ow. Very poignant. There's a WWI monument to a dying horse with its driver trying to comfort it that just mists me up every time I so much as THINK of it.

Sumo0172 In reply to MensjeDeZeemeermin [2012-03-20 00:11:46 +0000 UTC]

that's exactly the kind of emotion i hoped to invoke with this illustration. where is this monument? and it's name? i'd love to look it up

wow, thank you for sharing. so heartbreaking. although the elf in my illustration isn't a soldier, she did have a strong attachment to the dragon having been with him as he grew. in that way she does share the heartache those soldiers felt as they lost their animal companions. it's that pain and emotion i tried to show in the illustration.

One difference--the dragon was a fighter and got to hurt back... The poor horses never understood what killed them, and why they had to die...

Sumo0172 In reply to MensjeDeZeemeermin [2012-03-21 03:19:12 +0000 UTC]

true. i don't know if you saw the movie War Horse, it tried to show the tragedy of these horses. for me it's a little successful but it could have been better

Couldn't bear to watch it--WWI was one of the greatest human tragedies of all time.
