D-LZ127, otherwise known as the Graf Zeppelin, was the longest airship upon completion in 1928 and served as a passenger ship for 9 years. It's name comes from the inventor of Zeppelins: Graf (German for "count") Ferdinand von Zeppelin. Th ship made over 590 flights in it's lifetime, including a circumnavigation of the earth in 1929. Its last flight was in 1937, when over the Canary Islands, it received a grim radio transmission: The Hindenburg had burst into flames over Lakehurst, NJ. The Graf Zeppelin was grounded indefinitely and scrapped for parts in 1940.
