An idea I've had for awhile where the Roman Empire never collapsed. This map is set in the 13th century, where Rome reached its apex of power, although the city did not directly rule the entire empire. Instead, the Roman Emperor in the 9th century broke the empire into three jurisdictions: one under the city of Rome, one under the city of Constantinople, and one under the city of Kiev. The empire is still one whole, however there are three emperors, usually brothers, equal to each other ruling over separate lands. Outside the prosperous empire to the north is the Viking Confederation, who according to rumor, have discovered a new land across the sea. To the far east is the Song Dynasty of China, which is actively experiencing its golden age. Many luxury goods are being carried across Central Asia between the two great empires, however something is brewing in the northern steppe. Some Mongol tribes have organized and started a few massive raids into the northern frontier, however its unlikely for them to attack the metropole. Between the two are the Khwarezmians, descendants of the Persians and a constant thorn in Rome's side. Beyond them is the Delhi Sultanate, another great trading partner, however they aren't quite the same as the Chinese. In Africa, the Axumite Kingdom is a friendly power with the Romans, and across the desert, the Kingdom of Mali trades gold and salt to the North African coast.
