Description Whoot! It's done! Huge file, guys, so beware if you download. o0;

So, voila! My new project! Being the obsessive character designer that I am, I'm always looking for new abstract things to turn into characters. So why not design some based off of the place I love most in the world?
I was actually surprised no one had done something like this before. Not on DA, at least. o0;

These characters were designed with the idea of being a kids tv show, somewhere along the lines of Codename: Kids Next Door.
You hear that, Disney Channel? Here is an idea for a show that doesn't suck. I know how badly you need it. You're welcome.

So um, if you have free time, I was thinking you guys could help me iron out some of my ideas for these guys. You never know, I could actually get a chance to use these someday.

The basic premise of the show would be that these kids run around either the park or wherever they live (or maybe they live in a city based off the park, eh? Eh? Like, the Haunted Mansion is the suburb's resident ghost house, the Castle is... a... hotel... I don't know, I'm brainstorming here) and get rid of baddies (it's a kids' show, pretty basic. I had the idea that the baddies could be Disney baddies...) . Now, each of the kids has an artifact that they use to get the job done. Here's the low-down on the kids, left to right:

Chris Crockett: A wily, goofy kid. Not necessarily book smart, but he's pretty street smart and quick, given he's grown up in the wilderness. Still, he can be pretty immature at times.
Artifact: Honey Bomb. Pull the red pin and lob thy Holy Hand- I mean, throw the Honey Bomb at your pursuers. It will then explode into a giant gooey, sticky mess that will take days to lick yourself out of.

Nikki Olivia Silvan: The quiet, mildly scary one. She's not really as sadistic as she seems, she just reserves her words. When she opens her mouth, be sure to listen. Of course, sometimes she doesn't open her mouth when she should, like when you walked out of the bathroom with toilet paper on your shoe.
Artifact: Ghost Ball. Holds 999 happy haunts that are willing to lend a hand when called upon, whether it's to open a locked door or just to give a good scare. Some of the spirits can be somewhat mischievous, though, so beware!

Felicity Thunder: Very resourceful and has a good head on her shoulders. She's a born leader, but can be a bit nosy and bossy about other peoples' business, even if she means well.
Artifact: Slingshot. Nothing beats a good propelled rock to the head. Of course, it can only be handled by someone with a great eye for aim.

Adam Indiana: A go-getter, leap-before-you-look kind of guy. Always has high spirits, but gets especially excited when there's danger involved. That said, he can get a little over-zealous and rush in without thinking.
Artifact: Whip. If you need to grab a limb or keep rabid bunnies at bay, this can pretty much be used for anything. However, Adam might get mad if you try to use it as a jump rope.
Cruiser: Adam's pet tegu lizard. He often enjoys riding lazily on Adam's shoulder, but can be very helpful when crawling into tight spaces. He usually sees danger long before Adam does, but sadly Adam has yet to translate Cruiser's hisses and grunts, so the warnings usually go unnoticed.

Maddie Strong: Crafty, smart, and always ready to kick some badguy butt. She has great leader instincts, but prefers to work alone (and getting all the credit isn't a bad thing either).
Artifact: Rocket Slinger. Pull the trigger and head for the hills! This weapon's dynamite- but its explosions are just sooo pretty!

Francine "Fanny" Darling: A likeable, cheery, and pretty girl. She has great faith in the magic of the world, and never lets her spirits get crushed just because a situation seems hopeless. She's not dumb, but can be very absent-minded at times, often getting lost in her dream world. By the way, she's quote fond of her nickname, despite the giggles it sometimes causes.
Artifact: Magic Wand. Can bring objects to life for a short amount of time. DO NOT USE ON FOOD.

Tony "Toony" Darling: Fanny's younger brother. He's pretty quiet, but shares his sister's childish wonder. He can be of little use when fighting badguys, but sometimes he might surprise you.
Artifact: Stuffed Elephant. Elephant can grow into a giant flying elephant for a short amount of time. Not much use in battle (it is only fluff, after all), but can make a quick escape.

And lastly,
Tommy Blaster: In short, the geek. He's a technological wiz, and can hack just about anything. But when it comes to street smarts, he's at the bottom of the class. His people skills are sub-par, but he has a good heart.
Artifact: Astro Blaster. ZAP! Ouch, that stings!

Whew! Now, these guys are supposed to be a group, but you might notice a little problem...
THERE ARE TOO MANY OF THEM! The typical kids action show has either 3 or 5 main members, since we love odd numbers and 7 just gets too confusing. Remember, little kids have to be able to get to know the characters. 5 seems to be about the limit they can handle at one time. But, of course, I'm not going to trash the others. Remember how I mentioned C:KND? That had 5 main members, but as the episodes went on, other characters would spend a mission or two with them, such as Maurice, Numbuh 86, or even Bradley the skunk.
So, who do you think should be in the main 5? I have my own ideas, so here's my take:
Felicity Thunder
Tommy Blaster
Fanny Darling
Nikki Silvan
Adam Indiana (& Cruiser)

Now, the Disneyland fan in me is going "Wait, hellooo?! Shouldn't Main Street's character, Maddie, be a main character, if not the leader?" So here's my reasoning. Maddie is a really strong character with a huge personality. In fact, it's a little too big. I think she'd be much happier doing her own thing for the most part, checking in every once in a while to show the others how it's done. The fact that she's a leader AND a go-getter would make her clash with both Felicity and Adam, meaning they'd have to become side characters. The fact is that the main leader of a show seems to work better if he or she has a slightly calmer disposition. Maddie could probably think up brilliant tactics on the spot, but would probably rush in before telling it to the rest of the crew. So, Maddie will pop in for a couple amazing butt-kicking escapades.
The other two outsiders are pretty simple. Tony Darling is just too little to be out there fighting, though Fanny might have to babysit him once in a while. And Chris Crockett, well, he just doesn't have the personality to make a main character slot. It's more of a gut feeling than actual logic, but the goofy, silly ones are usually more endearing when you only see them once in a while, rather than having to deal with his immaturity in every story. Plus, both of these characters represent Disneyland lands that are usually forgotten or just lost among the excitement of the other lands, so they naturally fit into a side character slot.

So now you might ask "Well, if you wanted, say, Maddie to be the leader and make Felicity less of a leader?" Well, that's the beauty of character design. When creating a character, sometimes they just end up gaining a personality all by themselves, and they cling to it for dear life. Felicity is resourceful, smart, and a leader, just like I'm sarcastic and sadistic, and Michael Jackson's a creeper. People can't just change their personality, and I find the same is true with characters.

But now that I've said my piece, I want to hear your take! Got a dream team that's different from mine? Tell me and explain why!

But wait! Some of you hard-core Disneyland fans might be saying "Hey Mouse, you know there were Disneyland lands that are no longer in existence. When does Holidayland get some love? And what about those worlds only in Disneyworld?" Well, let's just say there's always room for cameos.

Oh! And the name! I was trying to think of what kind of name I could hear that cheery little announcer guy on Disney Channel saying, and I came up with Watchword WD. Let me know if you can think of something better! (highly likely)

Okay... let me think... I think that's just about all I've got. So there you go. 3 pages of explaination. Congratulations if you read all of that, you have very little social life. But not less than me.

Disneyland is not mine, despite all my wishes and prayers, but the characters are. Yay me! ...Oh my gosh, I did not just quote a Disney Channel show.

EDIT: Sorry for the unsightly signatures, but I want to protect my babies while still allowing you to download to see it full-sized. No stealing, please!

This is a magnificent idea! I can't believe I never saw it before!

I've actually been gradually developing my own concept for park-based adventures, called Knights of the Magic Kingdom. In my setting, Disneyland is the gateway to an entire collection of pocket worlds based on the rides, and there is a guild of people who can gain powers based on the lands to defend the pocket worlds from monsters.

I can't tell you how gratifying it is to see someone else with that kind of sensibility about Disneyland--the idea that it can be a source of adventure all on its own, without relying entirely on the movies or characters. Lots of fanfics use Disneyland and Disney World as a jumping-off point, but rarely does the park itself take a starring role--it's usually all about the film characters.

I know this is several years old, but did you ever do anything more with it? I'm fascinated!

Great to meet another Disneyland fan! That sounds like a great idea you have- It's hard not to feel like Disneyland has a sort of magic all its own. It's really a wonderful place. ^^ I'm afraid I didn't do much else with these. At one point I started designing characters to represent parts of California Adventure and Downtown Disney, but I'm not sure where those got to. It was a fun idea, but I'm not sure anything will come from it. At the least, I'd definitely redesign these characters, since I've learned a lot about character design in the last 3 years.

I've never been able to get into California Adventure to the same extent. It just doesn't have The Magic. (The capital letters are intentional.) Maybe it's because Disneyland is all about taking you to other worlds and times, and California Adventure is too grounded in the here-and-now. They've made more of an effort lately to give that same feeling of being transported, but they have to play pretty fast and loose with the theming to do it, and it's jarring. Get off Pinocchio's Daring Journey, and you're still in a storybook village. Get off the Little Mermaid, and you're looking at a big gaudy Ferris wheel.

This is not to say that California Adventure isn't fun, because it is. It just doesn't capture my imagination the way Disneyland does and always has.

Nah, I agree. It's more like a normal theme park, a good one, but it doesn't give me the same feeling.

As I've been working on KotMK, I haven't been able to make California Adventure relevant. It's easy to imagine how a fairy or a pirate or a Space Ranger would fight monsters. But a movie star? A surfer dude? Plus, the way the park is divided up is confusing, what with lands and then sub-lands and whatnot.

If you ever do tackle it, I'll be interested to see how you manage!

And I like (and agree) with your reason on keeping the main cast down and who to not-give main character slots too. xD

It's too bad cartoons aren't more like this. I don't get to watch much TV anymore, but I don't really miss it because there's tons of brainless crap on TV nowadays. D|

... Heeeyy... that's a good idea... (<
I wanted to say use the original 5 (MainStreet, Adventure, Frontier, Fantasy, and Tomorrow) seeing that they are pretty universal to all the parks (Execpt HongKong's lack of a Frontierland), while the other three would be occational side characters...
but you're right. 2 "Leaders" would be hard to deal with.

On that note, I think limiting it down to the remaining 4 (ADL,FROL,FANL, &TOML) with Maddie as an occational character (I'm thinking with her attitude she'd be more of a "Rival" character who helps/hinders depending on the episode), and jumping from there.

Wow, these are really cute and the idea is really interesting!! I'm all for this being a cartoon.. HINT HINT WINK WINK DISNEY!!

I think I know what you mean about cutting down the main character count by a bit, though it is a shame. It seems like all of them as a big group would play off of each other quite well. If you had to choose five out of the eight to focus on, though, maybe it would be cool to have the five original "lands," Main Street, Tomorrowland, Adventureland, Frontierland, and Fantasyland?

That would be kind of cool, actually.. Because it seems like if you did that, the girls would outnumber the guys, which isn't something you usually see in cartoons of the sort you're implying.

and Numah 2 Hoagie and he had the little brother who saved the entire KND organization from the delightful children and father, but was never allowed to become a member of KND. I dont remember why...
Numah three was Kuki had a younger sister Mushi (sp?)..I think and she did love the hamsters that supplied the electricity for their base.
Numah 4 was wally He had a baby brother...I think and I do remember seeing his dad on that take your daughter to work day episode where his dads boss tired to blast the kids into space by throwing a rainbow monkey party to keep them distracted.

J- Stop... Stop now....This is getting to be to long.

C- But...but... I cant hardly find anyone who watched KND..

X3 (of course, I was a bit obsessed with Numbuhs 3 and 4) *gasp* You don't know people who've watched KND? I warped all of my friends with it a few years ago! In fact, so far that one of my friends started a game of tag Sophmore year- right after the episode when they revealed that the leader of KND was chosen by a game of tag. That show was amazing...
