Awesome tutorial! Although, I've got a question regarding the material(as I live in the land of strict rules regarding props at cons). Is it for lack of better synonyms hard? Norwegian rules make it difficult to get props past the security guards for cons.

What kinds of props are allowed? o_o

knownrecidivist In reply to sunlitebreeze [2012-05-03 13:11:42 +0000 UTC]
Nearly none. XD The original rule is "nothing that looks like a weapon is allowed in public", but that sort of defeats the point of props, so the guards basically check if it could possibly IN ANY WAY harm someone. Foam and stuff like that is okay. Plastic is usually not, cardboard is okay and so on.

How much is Wonderflex usually???
I need to eventually make Suzaku/Zero's sword from Code Geass, and a price estimate would be kind of awesome.

If you buy it on dazian.com, they only sell by the yard so it will cost about $60 for one. A yard will be enough for 3 swords though. You can also look on cosplaysupplies.com for smaller sheets. There is a "large" sheet on there for about $40.

There are lots of other methods, but i have found that the wonderflex is the cleanest and easiest method. C:

I would like to point out that the main difference between the blue and pink insulation foam is that, when you sand the foam and breathe in the particles (which will happen unless you wear a dust mask), the blue stuff is toxic while the pink stuff is not. I'm not entirely sure WHY, but i think it's a similar principle to what happens when you inhale asbestos.
Also, a hotwire designed for cutting foam really helps in the tedious cutting process. you can usually find them next to the styrofoam at Hobby Lobby or Michaels
the sword really does look magnificent, by the way.

Really? o_o I didn't know. I feel like a mask should be worn regardless of what color the foam is. I mean, its insulation foam. o_o It can't be good to inhale especially while sanding. I will definitely look into that hotwire, it sounds like a wonderful idea! Thank you!

well, yes, i would always go with a mask too. but. some people are like "what? a mask? pfft."

But its insulation foam! >_< That's dangerous! Its basically little pieces of glass that people are inhaling. >>;

hmmm, more like little bits of plastic. but yeah. same risks apply. i just... see a lot of stupidity in my sculpture classes.

You can also use spackle, plaster, ect, to reinforce it also, just sand after application, and if you wanna spray paint it just paint it first completely covering it with a 50/50 mix of white glue/wood glue and water and then let it dry this protects the exposed cells and keeps the spray paint from eating it.

I used to do the plaster and paint method, but the wonderflex is a lot easier to use and less messy which is why I prefer it. XP Thank you though.

The wonderflex is what is heated, not the foam. Once it is activated the wonderflex becomes malleable and sticks right onto the foam. ^___^
