Jamila Hayes isn't sure anymore. At least, she isn't sure what she wants from life in general and from martial arts specifically. You can blame much of that on the way her relationship with her first gym ended, but 'Smooth Jazz' prefers not to dwell on the past.

In her present she's a graduate student at a prestigious public university, serving as a researcher and teaching assistant to the undergraduate students in the various squishy science departments. None of her students would suspect, that short, kindly, bespectacled Jam is the owner of some impressive submission grappling accolades and a decidedly unimpressive MMA record.

A high school flirtation with Jiu Jitsu became a burning passion for martial arts. It didn't take long for the short Caribbean woman to become a regular at her New Orleans gym. She kept training and eventually branched out to see all the styles the gym had to offer, but the deep blue sea of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu mats has always been her home. It wasn't long until some of the coaches encouraged her to try Mixed Martial Arts. Unfortunately, that's where the problems started. Bad weight cuts, a standup striking style that didn't fit her natural talents, a sudden change of coaches all conspired to deny Jamila her first pro MMA win. A sudden change in ownership, and coaching, at the gym left her feeling like an outsider, and so she left, eventually leaving her job as well.

Now Jamila has made the move across the country to Los Angeles, and gone back to get her Ph.D to boot. She's found work in a biology lab while she studies and while she's ostensibly content to just train with the other students and occasionally roll on the mats with whoever shows up that night, there's more to Jamila. As much as she'd like to ignore it, there's a hunger inside her. She's begun checking out other gyms across south Los Angeles, looking for a place that'll rekindle what she had back home. In the meantime, she's given up any pretense of a diet or weight cutting. Jiu Jitsu doesn't judge, and no matter her shape, an armbar or a rear naked choice works just as well. And no one expects much from the thick nerd with even thicker glasses, but there have been rumors of her students challenging her on the mats with extra credit or a better grade on the line. Stories of undergrad students actually prevailing over her are much harder to come by.

Turning over a new leaf means looking for a new place to hide, but poke this nerd at your own peril.
