Description Naughty at best, Charlie has become downright cranky now that breeding season has arrived. He tends to get angry when anyone enters the honeymoon suite, even if it's only to deliver a meal.

He still is. Thankfully he's being displeased with someone else now.

This made me laugh when I saw it in the thumbnail in your gallery You have a beautiful gallery, but this one just popped out at me, must be because I have a very soft spot for parrots He's lovely! I've always wanted a Rainbow Lorrie but heard they're very messy since they're nectar-eating birds.

In small cages yes, but it's not so much of an issue if they're in big outdoor cages/hanging cages etc. However they can be very aggressive, but their sense of humour is in line with most parrots & lorikeets.

Had a Greenie (AKA - Scaly Breasted Lorikeet) a few years back that had fallen from its nest. We looked after it until it was able to fly and it joined a flock of Rainbow Lorikeets and showed them my guava trees the following year. Until he showed them the fruit trees they only fed on our umbrella tree and left the guavas alone. The year after that he brought a flock of greenies as well (a mixed flock of Greenies and Rainbows can really decimate a fruit tree). It was good to see him and know he did well in the wild, he would still come to us and get a scratch.

Yeah, sometimes their good memory can be as annoying as their social nature.

But they do have a lot of character and can get quite cheeky.

Circumstance meant their previous owner had to give them up, but we have 3 and they're all as inquisitive as one another.

Rainbow Lorikeet.

Damn, I didn't put that in the description! Goes to show how splintered my brainpan is as that was originally ALL I was going to put in the description section.

Sir-Didymus In reply to SunOwl [2008-08-14 23:32:16 +0000 UTC]

he he he, I thought it might've been a rosealla because they look similar (well at least to these untrained eyes they do, they all get shot at when they come near my fruit trees)

SunOwl In reply to Sir-Didymus [2008-08-14 23:40:05 +0000 UTC]

Rosellas are mainly red, red,& red.

Yes, unfortunately they do get shot at when they come near your fruit trees.

Dontheunsane In reply to SunOwl [2009-08-27 00:04:38 +0000 UTC]

Not all, the pale headed lorikeet is mostly blue, green and has a yellow head. They are a close relative to the Eastern Rosella (bright red and green) and where their range overlaps (right on the QLD/NSW border) they can freely interbreed. Not many people realise that the Pale Headed Lorikeet is a rosella - probably because of the complete lack of red.
They used to be common here but I don't see them very much anymore so I don't have any pictures - yet.

SunOwl In reply to Dontheunsane [2009-08-28 01:01:34 +0000 UTC]

Count me amongst the 'not many'. I wasn't aware that the Pale Headed's were Rosella's.

Dontheunsane In reply to SunOwl [2009-08-28 04:14:09 +0000 UTC]

I only found out when studying species clines in zoology at uni 10 years ago. Down near the border you can see both Pale Headed Lorriketes and Eastern Rosellas and, apart from the colouring, the birds are the same. Occasionally you even see a couple of Pale Headed's in a flock of Rosellas, then you can really see the similarity. If you are really lucky you may even see a Pale Headed/Eastern cross.

Were you studying just out of interest or towards working in the field?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dontheunsane In reply to SunOwl [2009-08-29 11:34:59 +0000 UTC]

I didn't have anything set in mind so I tended to drift sideways through a wide range of subjects. When I finally left I had considered trying for medicine until I started to find out things I really didn't like that would have made it a waste of time. Doctors who are more interested in the wellbeing and most effective methods of treatment for their patients istead of drug company profits (eg - it is illegal here in Australia to safely and effectively treat cancer, there are safe effective treatments and I can vouch for this personally), government policy and popular theory don't have a very long career.
Other things happened so I never used my formal qualifications for income, but I have used what I learned for myself and for that my time at Uni was well worth it.
In Australia labourers can earm more money than many Uni graduates, that's why so many go overseas.

yes, yes they do, bloody annoying Aussie imports

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SunOwl In reply to Sir-Didymus [2008-08-17 23:47:04 +0000 UTC]

I'm of the opinion that no LIVING thing should be imported/exported to/from ANY country without PROPER quarantine & control.

Of course I realise it's a teeny (ha!) bit late for that - since half of Aust's wildlife has been destroyed and the land is being taken over by non-native flora (some of it non-natural [ie GM crops]) but it's better late than never.

yeah thats why you got lots of crap... the import tax really did mother natures head in

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SunOwl In reply to Sir-Didymus [2008-08-22 09:43:00 +0000 UTC]

Pfft! It wouldn't be the import tax. Import tax is less than the tax Aust's have to pay for producing the same goods.

But yeah, I can see how the imports might have done Mrs Nature's head in.
