Description (EDIT:: I forgot a title.... So, here's an uncreative one. XD)

5th task, "In Private"

I chose to show Mamoru's favorite food, because he and Hana have a little tradition of making dinner together every night.

His favorite food is tikka masala, with sweet potatoes.   It's an Indian dish, that reminds them of their mother.  She did all the cooking in their home before she passed away, but taught Mamoru a lot before then.  He has a sweet tooth, while Hana loves things spicy. ^^ The tomatoes and cilantro are from their garden~ :3

(Like the 60s style kitchen, with its hideous countertops and cabinets? XD  And that ugly wallpaper that was taken directly from my own house? )

Favorite food: Tikka masala w/ sweet potatoes & chickpeas

Favorite drink: Warm milk with honey

Favorite school subject: Probably earth science... he dropped out when he was 15, though.

Secret little habit: Well... he likes getting dirty. XD  Also, he collects rocks!

Sleeping position: On his side; one hand balled up by chin and other arm outstretched

Usually adopted team role: Helpful follower

Awe, this is adorable.

I really like the space of it, it actually feels like they're standing in that kitchen (which is cute af)

I also love how specific all his trivia is! Like I feel the rock thing (I used to collect geodes |D)
Great!

Thanks!! It took a while to figure out the perspective for this and if you see the bottom left.. well, I basically had to cut into the wall to get it
Haha, as I kid I would collect rocks, so I shared that trait with him.

This is so cute! (even though knowing the whole story, it's still kind of sad seeing these little moments with Hana :'D)

earth science... what a good favorite subject for a miner XD

This is such a sweet scene and the cliche clashing kitchen adds to the pleasant atmosphere XD It's rather calming and relateable, like you could imagine yourself their enjoying the smell of cooking wafting about.
Knowing more about his character, it warms my heart to see him happily making dinner with Hana. Tikka masala is delicious, though I've only had packet made, so I'm sure home made would be even nicer~ <3
And I like the little collection of rocks on the table XD Very nice work!

Aww, thank you!   Glad someone knows what tikka masala is! I also like that you noticed the rock collection XD  Thanks so much for the comment

This is so amazing!  I can't believe how well you did everything in the house, especially the wallpaper!  The tomatoes and cilantro look perfect, and his sister is so cute here!  The whole scene is warm and welcoming, and they are so happy!
  He is a fascinating character!

Ah, thank you so so much!!   The house took me forever and I'm really not confident doing architecture/furniture so it means a lot that you like it

It is hard to do architecture, and you certainly did well!  You are most welcome!

I love the gentle coloring in this picture. Sweet and spicy, in my experience, don't really go well together . . . What does tikka masala taste like? Was their mother of Indian heritage?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SunsetBlazer In reply to Meghan-Dzurichko [2017-02-06 17:29:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank you :3  Yes, their mother was of African (I'm not exactly sure which county yet) and Indian descent, while their father was Japanese.  Masala is a rich creamy tomato sauce that's a little sweet (and can be spicy), but with a strong herbal flavor that's hard to describe. Usually made with chicken a put over rice, but Mamoru likes it with sweet potatoes. :3 It's really yummy!

That's interesting. I'm sure you've already stated this somewhere but, what country does Mamoru live in?

SunsetBlazer In reply to Meghan-Dzurichko [2017-02-07 21:09:20 +0000 UTC]

I don't think I have, actually... but they live in the United States, somewhere in the Appalachian mountain range

Meghan-Dzurichko In reply to SunsetBlazer [2017-02-07 21:23:03 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! I love Appalachia. What type of neighbor hood? Trailer park, rural, suburban? He has a nice garden so I can't see him living in a big city.

SunsetBlazer In reply to Meghan-Dzurichko [2017-02-08 04:42:41 +0000 UTC]

It might be a trailer park (I know his cousin lives in one)--but I'm not entirely sure yet. The town they live in is poor for the most part; it's a fairly small community, a mining town that's dying out... in 10 or 20 years it will probably be a ghost town.
Thanks for the questions

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Meghan-Dzurichko In reply to SunsetBlazer [2017-02-08 20:28:36 +0000 UTC]

That's sad . . . What will he do when it turns into a ghost town? does he plan on leaving eventually?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SunsetBlazer In reply to Meghan-Dzurichko [2017-02-08 20:42:34 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... His part of the story is especially sad...
While the rest of the cast moves on, Mamoru ends up getting himself stuck in a time loop for many years. When he does break free from it and returns to the "real" dimension, the town will be almost completely vacant. His cousin will have waited for him, though (she's a physic and figures out where he disappeared to)--and from there... well, there's a ton of things/other characters that you need to know because that's the finale of the series XD He will probably end up settling in a different town, though.

Meghan-Dzurichko In reply to SunsetBlazer [2017-02-08 21:00:47 +0000 UTC]

That is sad. It's nice that his cousin waits for him though. I hope his getting stuck in a time loop pays off. . . I guess that's the danger of time travel.

Oh gosh! I just love the background so much! The light, almost pastel-like coloring really gives a summery vibe, which really suits the happy occasion of Hana and Mamoru cooking together! The kitchen seems quite spacious, barely cluttered, and although the fact there's only two chairs at the kitchen table could have been played as yet another sad thing an Mamoru's life, it is quite clear that in spite of them living on their own, they are quite happy - content, even - on their own, with their own place.

The flowers on the table are a nice touch, and the fact they're using ingredients from their own garden really shows just how... rooted they are, how in touch with the earth, in a way. The smiles on both of their faces are simply delightful, and it is clear that both brother and sister value one another greatly. Mamoru really seems to look out for Hana, and Hana seems to bring him joy (just as he does to her!)

Nice perspective work, too - and I always just love your watercolors! The colors always are both soft and vibrant at the same time, and I think that's really cool!

Lovely work!

Thank you so very much!!
It was a bit of a challenge because I'm not really used to drawing architecture or furniture. Definitely something I need to sit down an practice!
I want to do an art series of all of the character's homes; and while this isn't an official design for Mamoru/Hana's house yet, I do imagine that they have minimal possessions and keep their humble abode very tidy (as opposed to another character who's mother is a hoarder... XD that's going to be a fun one to draw )
Despite all the hardships they've faced in their short lives, they are so very happy just being together.

MegaMaeve In reply to SunsetBlazer [2017-02-13 14:17:25 +0000 UTC]

You're very welcome!

You did quite well on the architecture, to be honest! The perspective is pretty neat, and you decorated well, using the space on your page well (aka: it's a good composition!) Their sparse belongings reveal that they've got a humble abode (while still having a homely living space!), and this piece shows that very well!

I wish you luck on all of the designs you've yet to make X'D I can imagine it's going to be a pain - especially in the case of the hoarding household X'D

I really like the joyful vibe of this piece! Your art's always so lovely!

Aww, this is such a sweet scene. How big is the age difference between the two? How long ago did the parents die? Does his sister remember them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SunsetBlazer In reply to StoryMaker91 [2017-02-02 21:13:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!  They're about 3 and a half years apart.  Mamoru was 15 (Hana, 11) when their mother committed suicide... which was a couple months after their father passed away in an accident. She does remember them pretty well but since it's such a sad situation neither of them like thinking of it. Mamoru harbors some bitterness towards their mother for giving up on them (and, actually, trying to kill them too  This part his sis doesn't know about... but their mother let the gas run from their stove, hoping they could all die peacefully from carbon monoxide poisoning...)

Thanks for asking, but sorry I had to tell you such a depressing story... XD

StoryMaker91 In reply to SunsetBlazer [2017-02-14 03:03:55 +0000 UTC]

Oooo, that's rough. I can understand why Mamoru would have some bitterness. I think I would too. How did custody work out after their mother died, with Mamoru only being 15?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SunsetBlazer In reply to StoryMaker91 [2017-02-15 05:11:47 +0000 UTC]

They moved in with their mother's sister and lived there until Mamoru was a legal adult. (those few years were rough... they've got 4 cousins who also lived in that small house @__@) Social services do exist and eventually take part in the story, but the characters live in a small rural town so a lot of sh*t gets overlooked.

StoryMaker91 In reply to SunsetBlazer [2017-02-21 01:19:54 +0000 UTC]

That makes sense. It sounds like the kind of situation my sister would have a field day with. She loves shoving a bunch of characters together and watching the ensuing fireworks, as well as love.
