Description

A really lovely commission for the upcoming book series of the adventures of Jimmy Chartron, the scene portraying his first visit to the library. One of my first indoors scenes and a real challenge but taught me a lot and was a pleasure to work on!

Approx. 31 hours, will post the video process a bit later!

Please note: I'm doing everything I can to learn myself, but my skills are not at the level of this piece - I want to get better at critiqueingΒ
This is a great indoor scene! I've noted that you have points of detail in some places, and loss of detail in others, which seems great for guiding, but I feel like the points chosen seem somewhat sporadic? The staircase on the left side seems to be one such point, while I'm personally more drawn to the person on the right, closest to us.Β
But if I were to think about the scene itself being the focus, I can see your choice. Then though, I would have liked to see more detail on the globe on the right, for example, to enforce the illusion of depth.

I hope that all makes sense

I really love this picture though. You did such a nice job on depicting the different textures, the shine, the lighting. The warm colour palette with the lightly contrasting blues draw my eye as well. Really great stuff!

I hope to see more great artwork from you. I personally really appreciate constructive criticism as well, and I know it's hard to come by, so I'll do my best!

Wow, thank you for the in-depth comment! Your feedback is appreciated, and you're probably very right about what you're saying. I'm really unfamiliar with big scenes like that, especially ones with landscapes or indoor scenes. Looking at it now I can definitely see what could be improved on, especially with the sense of air perspective and details, like you pointed out. It's definitely something that I should practice more, as usually I only ever draw scenes with characters in focus. I'm so glad you like the picture though, it was definitely a challenge and there are some things that I like and some I don't, too.

By the way, if you like these kinda pictures and haven't heard of this artist before, I'd definitely recommend to take a look at Karl Simon: www.artstation.com/karlsimon

His Beauty and the Beast concept art is really breathtaking, the color palettes are really cool, and something I drew a lot of inspiration from in this painting. I think he has photobashed some of the paintings, which is pretty standard for concept art, but they still come across as really painterly and consistent. Definitely check him out if you haven't!

Thanks for getting back to me! And like I said, I'm no better at getting big scenes like this to work myself, but it's always easier to look at something and find points to critique, when you haven't been the one to think the thing out - let alone stared at it for 10-20+ hours.Β I'm really impressed with what you've accomplished here.

And thanks for the link! I happen to really like Karl's work. Especially the concepts he did on Beauty and the Beast Sure, some of it is photobashed, but like you mentioned, that's reality when you need to crank out a lot of concept art in a very short time. His sketches alone are wonderfully detailed.Β

I came back looking through your gallery. I think I have a good question for you. How do you choose you palette's out? Do you pre-choose and have a separate layer to work from or do you just paint and go having something in mind. I know some people like to pre-pick schemes while others work more organically.Β

suomar In reply to LadySeshiiria [2020-01-05 22:01:42 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late reply! I don't pre-choose the palette ever. I feel like that's something I should maybe try some day because sometimes I'm really struggling with my colors, but usually I just come up with them on my own. Sometimes I do look at reference paintings for the kind of color tones I'd like to use, but I'm not as organized about it as I'd like to be, to be honest. I know some artists make mood boards and such, it's probably helpful! But as of right now, I'm kinda just winging it haha.

Hahaha You sound like me. That's how I've been my color palette picks have been recent as of my requests and trades this year. I have found while it takes me longer to pre-pick a palette it helps me be more methodical and more able to focus on the composition. I think perhaps I started doing it because I see so many successful artists on here doing that. I thought maybe perhaps there was a reason for it. It seems to give a great measure of control.

I absolutely believe it helps to keep things under control, and I definitely want to learn to do that more at some point. Glad to hear it's helped you!
