Description
"Guys, I don't wanna sleep on the outside part! I'll get cold!" (Y/n) begged. Tonight was special for the X-men; she and the team had begged Charles to let them go camping. He was a little reluctant due to, er, past events, but he finally gave in. Everyone was really excited about it, even though where they were camped out was just in the woods about a mile away from the X-mansion. (If any ghosts were going to get them, at least the X-men'd be able to run back to the safety of the house, which they all agreed was pretty nice.)Kitty rolled her eyes. "I'm not sleeping against it! What if I roll out in my sleep?" She did have a point, (Y/n) thought.
Over across from the fire pit, the boys weren't having much difficulty deciding where to put their sleeping bags. They were smart and brought two tents, though it seemed like Scott and Warren were about to kick Bobby out of either tent.
"Come on guys! I thought the cold never bother-"
"If I have to hear another stupid Frozen pun from you Bobby, I swear to-"
"Just let it go, Scott!"
"Whatever. I'll live," (y/n) rolled her eyes. She couldn't stand to listen to the boys anymore. "You just have to do my laundry for a week."
Kitty's blue eyes widened and she practically yelled: "No! I am not! You can wash your own clothes, jeez!"
(Y/n) started to laugh lightheartedly and she flicked her hair out of her face. "You know I'm just messing with you." She threw her red sleeping back to the side along with Rogue's and Kitty's.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. I knew that." Kitty pouted and headed back to one of the logs situated around the fire pit. No one had started a fire yet, but the stars were still only just coming out yet so there wasn't much need-besides the fact that (y/n) was getting hungry and the thought of warm, melty s'mores was amazing and also taunting her.
She sat down next to Kitty and on the other side Rogue popped a squat. (Y/n) felt bad for her; Rogue was wearing a pair of gloves, a green hoodie, and long skinny jeans paired with combat boots. She didn't understand how she didn't have a heat stroke by now. It'd probably cool off later, though, which (y/n) was prepared for and brought a sweater to pull over her tee and jean shorts.
"Scott! Come get the fire!" (y/n) shouted at him- he was messing around with something in the tent. He crawled out quickly and he didn't notice that he was about to break apart the tent he'd spent the last half hour working on. (It was probably a good thing he didn't see, otherwise he would have gone back to fix it and (y/n) would waste away in her hunger.)
"Right! Fire! I've got this!" Scott squatted down next to the fire pit and grabbed two of the sticks. He then began to furiously rub them together.
(y/n) coughed. "Scott. I, um, think there's an easier way to do it?"
Rogue and Kitty snickered next to her.
Scott looked up at them from behind his rose quartz glasses, looking rather confused with his mouth open and eyebrows furrowed. Wow. Those glasses really did make him look like a douche bag, even though he was really a nice person.
Rogue tapped his glasses-she was on the closest side to him- and said with her trademark southern drawl, "Use your brain, genius! Or maybe your eyes."
Scott just stared at her for a second before understanding and nodded. "Oh. Right. Yeah."
He stood up and walked a couple steps back, then made sure everyone(meaning Bobby) was out of the way, then he quickly pulled his shades up over his forehead and opened his eyes, letting out an optic blast, just enough to create a spark. Scott covered his eyes back up and watched as the spark turned into a small flame, then into a blaze.
"Nice!" Warren said, stretching out his wings to get warmed by the fire.
"Yeah, nice for you," Bobby stuck his tongue out at him.
(Y/n) interrupted their little argument. "Hey, could one of you pass me the food bag, please?" Before leaving they'd just thrown a bunch of food in a duffel bag. She'd made sure she'd packed the things for s'mores.
"I got it." Warren said, and "accidentally" pushed Bobby out of the way with a wing to grab the army green bag and tossed it over to her.
She caught it easily and yelled a thank you before ripping it open and grabbing some marshmallows and impaling them on a stick. Of course, as soon as they saw the marshmallows, everyone wanted one so she passed the bag along.
Now it was really getting dark, and the flames of the fire were casting eerie shadows into the trees. It wasn't creepy, really, just peaceful, (y/n) tried to tell herself, but the crackle of the fire could easily be mistaken for someone stepping on a branch in the shadows.
"Mmmmmmm.." Bobby sighed as he shoved the marshmallow in his mouth.
"I agree.." Kitty said. She'd nearly put an entire chocolate bar on her s'more.
(Y/n) glanced around the fire. Scott was trying to eat his without getting it all over his face, except now it was just all over his hands and probably messier than it had been before. Poor baby. Rogue was roasting another one already and Warren, well, Warren seemed to be deep in thought.
"Do any of you know how this mansion came to be? I mean, really. Before Charles owned the land." Warren said softly. He was gazing into the fire absently. Everyone turned to look at him with wide eyes.
"You know something about the school?" Scott asked first. (Y/n) wondered if this was the start to a scary story, or if this was something real Warren had dug up somewhere. He looked pretty serious, but maybe he was just a good actor.
"Yeah..I was in the attic and I found some files about it." Warren's blue eyes slowly slid up to meet Scott's, err, glasses.
"Tell us about it!" Kitty begged; often they'd come up with stories about how Charles' had come to America and the mansion but this sounded like it could be legit.
"All right, all right." Warren said and leaned back a bit. Scott, however was leaning forwards, intrigued.(Bobby was eating his 5th smore.) "The farthest back thing I could find was the story of a very rich business man who came to New York...
"His wife had been born into a poor family, and the couple had come to America to escape the man's family, who didn't approve of their marriage." Somewhere off in the woods, an owl screeched. (Y/n) shivered and pulled her legs up closer to her body and kept her eyes on Warren as he continued.
"He bought land for her. In fact, the very land we stand on now. He built her a mansion, a very luxurious mansion. They would often hold parties- and I mean parties. Ballgowns, orchestras..the whole nine yards. Their life went on like that for years..They even had two children, a boy and a girl, who were adored by everyone. Everything was perfect for them...or so they thought. Not long after the daughter was born, though, his wife contracted tuberculosis. When she died the parties stopped and the man retreated into a heavy depression.
The old man really did care for his children, but every time he saw them, it reminded them of his wife and the pain was too much to bear. So the boy had to take care of his sister
When the kids were about, ehh..eight or ten, they were running through the house, playing, y'know, doing kid stuff. The man got very angry; their voices reminded him of when the house was filled with people-including his wife. He locked them away in their rooms. It was intended to be only for a few hours, but after awhile the man had fallen asleep. When he woke up, he discovered that his daughter, in an attemp escape, had jumped from her window. She was dead. And the boy...well, you know him as Charles Xavier."
Kitty gasped. "That's awful!"
Scott's lip curled and he pushed his glasses up on his nose. "I don't believe it."
(Y/n) didn't say anything. She was pretty sure it was just a story..but it was so...tragic. That couldn't be what happened..right?
"You may not believe it now.." Warren started. "But there's more."
Rogue groaned.
"Shut up. Anyways.. I myself only believed it was true until one night. Everyone else was asleep, I knew, but I could swear I heard music playing downstairs in the foyer."
It was then (y/n) knew she wasn't going to sleep tonight.
"I went down there but it stopped when I got there. Plus, there wasn't even a stereo or instruments or anything. So I turned around and headed back upstairs. As soon as I got in bed..I heard it again. More distinct..it was a plunk. Plunk. Plunk." Warren's voice was even quieter now and (y/n) could feel her heart race speeding up. This couldn't be real, right? She'd never heard that before? Or had she?
"I wanted to stay in bed but I couldn't stand listening to it anymore. It was driving me crazy. So I got up and walked back down to the foyer. There was nothing there and the music had stopped. But when I turned around..I heard it. The plunk plunk plunk. I turned around and there she was-"
"EUGHH!" Bobby let out a high pitched, very loud scream, bursting in out of the shadows. He popped in, between Rogue and Scott, and he accidentally knocked Scott's glasses off. (Y/n) jumped, and let out a yelp, startled, while Rogue jumped away from Scott's beam, which of course hit the girls' tent, sending it flying off into the woods.
"Sunglasses, sunglasses!" Scott yelled out and (y/n) spotted them underneath a log. She raced over and grabbed them and handed them to Scott, managing to avoid getting hit by the blast.
"Are you okay?" She asked Scott, and helped him stand up.
He brushed himself off and replied. "Yeah..I'm fine, thanks."
Warren was still sitting on his log laughing his butt off. "I honestly did not expect that to happen! I am so sorry, Scott!" He got out during giggles.
"It's not funny, Warren!" Kitty smacked him even though she was starting to snicker too.
"It totally was! I just didn't think Scott would do that!" Warren doubled over laughing. "The tent just went WHOOSH!"
Bobby joined in laughing too and used Warren's shoulder to support , who was sitting on the ground, hesitantly started laughing after sending Scott a nervous glance.
Scott, who was standing at (y/n)'s side, was really flustered. His face was red and he sputtered out some incoherent words. (Y/n) was nearly about to burst at the seams trying not to laugh at him.
"I-I could have hurt you guys! It's not funny!" He yelled in a strangled voice. (Y/n) noticed if she looked close enough though, it almost looked like he was trying not to smile. "Hey, but you didn't!" (Y/n) nudged him and smiled softly.
Scott looked down at her and clenched his jaw, then smiled. "Yeah, I guess you're right." (Y/n) felt like maybe she should do something like hold his hand but before she could grab it, he walked over to the center of the group.
"Well..I guess it was kind of funny. You really did get a scare out of me. But now we only have two tents, which means the girls are going to have to sleep with us boys." Scott put his hands on his hips while the boys cheered and the girls groaned.
"Unless you ladies want to go back and get the tent and then patch it up, I wouldn't be complaining." Rogue, Kitty, and (Y/n) all straightened themselves out and stopped whining. "And Warren and Bobby..if you two scare these ladies, or harass them, or maim them in any way, I'm sure Charles' will be hearing about it." Scott added and pointed accusingly at the boys.
Of course Charles'd hear about it, (y/n) thought, she wouldn't be surprised if he had been listening in this whole time.
Bobby and Warren rolled their eyes. They may be goofballs but they weren't stupid.
"So..who's gunna sleep in which tent?" Rogue asked and tugged at her glove nervously.
"We could do girls in one tent and boys in the oth-" You began, but Kitty nudged you a bit roughly. For someone who could easily slip through things she was pretty strong.
"How about, hmm...Bobby, Warren, Rogue, and I take one tent, and (y/n) and Scott take the other? That's not too bad of an arrangement, right?" Kitty other tent was smaller so that was actually a better plan than (y/n) came up with.
Warren nodded. "Yeah, that's good." He shot Scott a quick look with a smirk. It was obvious to everyone but (y/n) Scott liked her. Like, a lot. And because that's the way the world worked, (y/n) liked him back, and it was obvious to everyone except Scott.
"Can we get inside now?" Rogue shivered and crossed her arms. She glanced around nervously. "That story kinda freaked me out."
Warren rolled his eyes and smiled, kneeling down to unzip the tent. "It was just a story, Rogue."
She scowled. "Shut up."
Bobby jumped out behind Kitty, startling her, and said eerily, "Or was it?"
"I hate you!" She laughed and pushed him away. Scott, the cyborg, frowned at them, and ushered (y/n) to go in the tent first.
She headed in and left behind everyone else's laughter. Hopefully Scott'd loosen up a bit, sleeping with a rock wouldn't be very fun.
(Y/n) didn't know what to do when she only found one sleeping bag in the tent. "Um..Scott? Looks like we're going to have to share."
Both her and Scott blushed fiercly. "Well, at least we'll be warm." He shrugged and rubbed the back of his head, dangerously close to knocking off his sunglasses, which (y/n) hurriedly reached to fix.
He smiled graciously, staring for a bit longer than needed. "Oh, uh, do you want to get down first?" He asked once he snapped out of it.
"Sure," (Y/n) said, and plopped down on the sleeping bag. Scott sat down next to her and hesitantly reached over her to grab to blanket and pull it over the both of them.
They both lied down and listened to Rogue, Kitty, Bobby, and Warren giggling and smacking each other in the next tent. "They aren't going to get to sleep until the sun comes up," (Y/n) chuckled. "Yeah, this is why we have to have seperate dorm rooms," Scott joked.
(Y/n) smiled at him, though she wasn't sure he could see her in the dark with his sunglasses on. Wait..sunglasses? Really? In the dark? "Can't you take those off while you sleep?" She asked. She imagined those would be uncomfortable smushed up against his face in the night.
"Uh, yeah, but I want them on now." Scott said as if he were embarrased.
"But it looks like you can't see anything! Why bother?" (Y/n) asked. She was too curious for her own good.
Scott inhaled. "Because."
"Because whyyyyy?" (Y/n) begged. She knew she couldn't sleep until she got a good answer out of him.
Scott was quiet for a minute. (Y/n) was worried she had pushed him too far for a second, until he spoke again.
"Because I want to see you." He finally got out the words.
(Y/n)'s breath hitched. Did he just say what she thought he said? That was so cute!
"Awww, Scott! You're too sweet!" (Y/n) gushed; no one had ever said something like that to her.
Scott mumbled a nearly inaudible thank you and looked away-or at least she thought he did, his head kind of moved downwards so.
"But it looks like it's uncomfortable to sleep with those on. And you can't possibly see anything with those things on!" (Y/n) grinned. "You can see me in the morning, goofball." She then tried to pry his glasses off, but he rolled over right before she could grab them.
"No!" He laughed and shoved her off of him gently.
"You can't stop me, Scott!" (Y/n) scooted back over, and sat up to try and roll him back over to face her. He grunted, and after a couple of seconds of her trying to no avail he rolled over and looked up at her.
(Y/n) smiled at him. "There you are!" She giggled, and stared down at him. He might come off as arrogant, and a kill joy, and a douchebag, and a no-fun-haver, but underneath his shell, Scott was really just a sweet guy who had the best intentions. And with the moonlight streaming down through the mesh tent top on his face (and reflecting off of his ridiculous sunglasses) it was then that (y/n) realized she loved him.
She only slightly hesitated as she leaned down and pressed her lips gently up against his. Scott was shocked; she never had really shown any signs of her liking him like that! (Everyone else had seen it, of course, but Scott just thought she was being nice, because she was awfully polite to everyone. Most of the time.)
(Y/n) pulled back when Scott didn't respond and that was when he came back to the real world. (Y/n) felt hurt, maybe he really did like Rogue like she'd thought.
When Scott saw how (y/n)'s face fell he did something a little rash- he leaned up and kissed her back. He was a little more firm than she'd been, but it wasn't, like, overwhelmingly forceful.
(Y/n)'s heart skipped a beat. This was really happening, right now! He was really kissing her back right now! She pulled him closer to her. She wanted to stay in this moment forever with him..it was so perfect. She'd always wanted to do this.
Suddenly, there was a loud noise outside the tent. (Y/n) and Scott both sat up to see Bobby and Kitty standing outside their tent and had assumably zipped opened the tent, Β holding a box filled with dead fish.
Β (Y/n) and Scott glanced at each other, then back at Bobby and Kitty.
"What were you two planning on doing with those fish?" Scott asked, furrowing his brows.
Kitty swallowed. "Uh..what were you two doing just now?"
She stared at Scott and (y/n) for a minute before Bobby spoke. "We won't tell if you don't tell?"
Scott chuckled, and pulled (y/n) closer to him. "You've got a deal."
