Description
I couldn't really think of five new couples from the past year that I really shipped, so I decided to draw my top five of all time!
Going through all my favorites sine before I even knew what shipping was supposed to be made up quite a list! However, these couples held my interest for years, moved me to tears/fan-girlish giggling, and will always hold a special place in my heart.
Top left corner: Robin and Starfire (from the Teen Titans cartoon). When I first saw the episode "Date with Destiny," I decided that I wanted these kids to live happily ever after. I'd whine in frustration as these two danced around their feelings at Starfire's arranged marriage or when Robin said that Star wasn't his girlfriend.
When the "Trouble in Tokyo" movie came out I remember giggling and bouncing up on down in my seat as the two Titans finally kissed. I completely agreed with Cyborg's sentiment, "It's about time."
And for those of you who read through the comic book that tied into the series, you'll remember issue #47 where "Robin's Origin" is revealed. Granted that comic wasn't about Starfire and Robin's relationship, but the ending showed how much Robin trusts her and how much she understands that he's more than just his Boy Wonder persona and how she's helped him realize that for himself too.
Top right corner: Link and Zelda (from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.) I love the Legend of Zelda series, but I must admit that I don't usually fall to shipping Link and Zelda very often (for various reasons depending on which game we're talking), but I love the idea of these two getting together!
Not only are Link and Zelda childhood friends in Skyloft, but there was some very obvious flirting between them at times! And cutey reasons like that aside, I've never before glimpse such a feeling of caring from any Link before. He is our silent hero and even though you often get the idea that other Links do care for people (his endless side-questing, his chasing his friends to the ends of the ocean, and his general kindheartedness), none of it compares to this Link's love for Zelda. I was in tears when Link ran to Zelda as she went to sleep for thousands of years! And him banging on the crystal prison had me holding back a soft sob. So in the end when Zelda told Link that she wanted to live on the surface and she asked what he would do next... I am convinced that, after the cut away to the loftwings, Link pulled Zelda into a gentle embrace and then kissed her.
Bottom left corner: Ferb and Vanessa (from Phineas and Ferb). These two had five little moments throughout the entirety of the series which doesn't sound like the strongest basis for a ship, but that didn't deter me in the slightest! From the moment Ferb flashed back to meeting Vanessa at the Blueprint Shop I decided that I wanted them to end up together!
In one of the final episodes of the series called "Act Your Age" I finally got to see my other ship from this show end up together (Phineas and Isabella), but I can remember telling fellow fans that I really, really wanted to at least get some hint that Ferb and Vanessa had made it as well. Just a hint! And I did get to see them hug and kiss each other in a brief friendly greeting! It was so sweet!
Even though the series is over and done with now, I still fantasize about what Ferb and Vanessa might get up to together. I mean, can you imagine the family picnics?
Bottom right corner: Spider-Man/Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson (from Marvel Comics). I've come to realize that this is not a very popular couple among my fellow comic geeks, mostly because everyone seems to think that Gwen Stacy was the only girl for Peter and that Mary Jane is far too seductive.
But I love these two together. Peter was once described as the shy little nerd who dawns his Spider-Man persona and suddenly is set free from all his inhibitions and allowed to be this wise-cracking fun-loving hero. Mask or no mask, I see that same fun-loving personality come through when he's with Mary Jane. We find out at one point that MJ has the reverse problem of wearing the mask of a fun-loving care-free woman when she's really quite timid especially about her responsibilities. (I wonder who could possible help her with that problem.) They balance each other out and play off each other so well, I can't help but root for them.
Not to mention the fact that I absolutely adore this couple in the MCU where they have a superhero daughter named May and a wall-crawling baby boy named Benji. They really did make great parents as well.
And finally the center: Syaoran and Sakura (from Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle). So many ups and downs... I hardly even know where to begin. *Spoilers ahead* I refer to the clones of the true Syaoran and Sakura with whom we began the series. I had no idea of the mess I was getting myself into when I invested myself in this couple. I thought it was the cutest thing when the young Princess missed her opportunity to tell the young archaeologist how she felt about him, jinxing everything with the sentiment that she would tell him about it tomorrow. Then Sakura loses her soul and her memories and Syaoran must go on a grand quest to save her. It broke my heart when she awoke for the first time and didn't know him. Such a heavy price that they both had to pay in order to set things right, because those memories of Syaoran were precious to Sakura as well and she didn't even know she lost them.
Of course all of this was nothing in comparison to what came next. I don't even want to try to recount the horrors ofย "Chapter 119. The Boy Fades Away" or the deafening sorrow "Chapter 179. The Two Images" where the princess fails to say how she feels yet again! After so much pain and loss, how could there be a happy ending?
I actually did have to put my book down and cry when Sakura finally got to say "I love you" to Syaoran before they both had to be reborn and separated once again. It was a moment of such joy, but so heavy with sorrow. When the two are finally reunited in their new lives and get to be together with their most precious one at long last, it's like a long breath of fresh air after holding one's breath! Even with all that later happens to them (Yeah, the heartbreak is still not over!), I was so happy just to see them living through all the hardship together. They didn't get happily ever after, but something that meant so much more. Lovely forever, for better or worse.
Characters (C) Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Warner Brothers, Cartoon Network, Nintendo, Dan Provenmire & Jeff "Swampy" Marsh, and CLAMP

I really like the parallelism in the poses; you convey the nuances of the individual relationships with just slight variations on tilting the heads!
Similarly, the different expressions are great for each character (not that I can really speak for Ferb and Vanessa), from Starfire's hopeful expectancy to Link's assured loyalty (which works whether one focuses on the romantic aspect of their relationship or not [I love that you talked about the variations therein]) to Sakura's awestruck joy.
The method of coloring is really striking on Spider-Man, contrasting the strict horizontal with the web design. At the same time, Zelda does look a little flat, but that's probably her fault for wearing white.

I'm glad that they didn't end up looking too repetitive. I really do want to get a better grasp of subtle expression.
And yay! Those were just the emotions I was trying to convey with those characters! Especially the loyalty in Link's expression. He's one of the most expressive Links out there and I wanted to do that justice.
Spidey was a real challenge because once I initially colored it he looked really washed out. I had to add a lot more shading at the last minute.
I knew Zelda was looking pretty flat there. All I could think to do was to add more layers of off-white, but then I would have lost the effect of the lighting. This was the same trouble I ran into with Asuna last year!

All the styles look nice! Also neat how the top two are facing eachother, and the bottom two are side by side.
Skyward Sword is certainly the ones who get most overly romantic that I've seen.
I had Robstar on the first one of these I did! I think I even had them in the same place!
Like eightcrows said with Tsubasa... things got so complex around the end... I'd like to read it again someday.

Thanks! The benefit of drawing these guys digitally is that I can line them up later so they all fit into place.
He's just so sweet! Skyward Link is definitely one of my favorite Links.
Oh yeah! You did draw them very similarly. You had drawn the same Zelink couple too! Great minds ship alike, I guess.
It was very confusing at times, yes. Time-travel and time-loops!

Whaagh! You've beat me to it! I haven't even started mine...
Robstar is one of my biggest takeaways from the cartoon. They're just so cute!
And Link and Zelda! I agree that Skyward Sword really was the one that got me with that one. I mean, I'm down with it most of the time, but there's always other options... But in that! It so out and out romance! Yeah, and the beating on the wall bit...
I admit, I've forgotten MUCH of what all happened in later Tsubasa, but I do remember all that heartache! Man, them Syaorans have a hard time with the romance...
A great happy-sad mix! ...I gotta get to work on mine...

There's no time-limit on such projects! I'm sure it'll be great!
Cute, indeed! Not something you always get to say about TT Robin, but he is adorable with Star.
The romance is so obvious! I just thought it was the cutest thing and knew it would be sad when Zelda was inevitable kidnapped, but I never imagined it would be so heartbreaking!
Yeah, I had to flip back through Tsubasa and the sadness all came rushing back to me. The universe needs to give these kids a break!
Thanks! Can't wait to see what you draw!
