I like this version the best. Seems to have a warmer tone and I like the tighter cropping.

Hi Kev,
The lighting and facial expression are great - the position is not the best - the right elbow comes at a weird place, and draws attention from the face - what I suggest is to crop the right elbow (very easy, the way the lighting is - right there on the shaded part) - and be left with a stunning composition, which I will immediatly!
Pleeeeease give it a try...

Like everybody before me, great shot.
How/what's the lighting setup you used to do this type of soft work? I noticed a lightbox in the reflection of her eyes; yes they were very nice to look at. Was that your only source?

Yes, just one softbox in this setup

Pretty eyes. Great shadows, and great shot. She is very beautiful, and you captured it in the shot very well.

Dramatic lighting plus wonderful angles/lines in the composition, and a very beautiful model..all adds up to one cool portrait.

I like the triangular composition of the model, it leaves my eyes traveling all over the picture

beautiful lighting, one problem she has pressure marks on her arms.
Some of the marks are on her right arm just before the harsh change in light. And the other marks are on her left arm by the elbow they look like this \ /. Tell your model though she has amazing eyes

like the way you used the light -- she is smooth and calm waiting for you to make that move -- but alas -- it never the move -- but your intention -- later days

great job kevin, as usual.. But me wonders a few things if you don't mind me asking..
why 130mm? it's not a very usual portrait setting.
and yea, do you use some layers with different blending, and some gaussian blur (with very small radius of course)? I am just amazed how smooth, the textures, especially skin turns out in some shots.
(No offense intended to the model, I am sure she has a great skin normally, but to capture it on film/sensor is a hard job)

130mm is not so unusual for portrait photos. i usually use a range from 100-200mm to flatten perspective and create nice shallow depth of field. sometimes i go as low as 70mm, but only rarely. i do not use any layers or blur to smooth the skin. soft lighting usually makes that unnecessary. i use the heal tool in photoshop to remove any temporary blemishes like pimples, stray makeup powder, etc.

Ah i see.. But then why is it known that 50-80mm are like the portrait depths?
Thanks for taking your time and clearing some points. Certainly appreciated

Iβve never heard nor read about 50β80 being best for portraits. Philip Greenspunβs portrait photography tutorial claims that 90β135 mm are typical lengths (and suggests that even longer is generally even better in terms of quality).
Maybe youβre talking about smaller digital SLRs? These have smaller sensors (typically 1/1.6 of the 35 mm format), so a 50β80 lens for these would actually give similar results as a 80β130 lens for a βfull-sizeβ camera.

quite possible that i remember wrong.. thanks for pointing out! i dont quite get why the longer focal length would give better results tho..

From Philip Greenspunβs aforementioned tutorial :
If you want to flatter your subject, you'll probably want to deemphasize his nose. That means you want to stand at 10 or 15 feet away from him so that his nose isn't significantly closer to you than the rest of his face.
I think this says it all.

everybody has their preferences. you can shoot a portrait with any kind of lens as long as you realize how the different focal lengths will affect perspective, depth of field, distortion, etc.

no worries. it's fun to experiment with different lenses and the same subject matter to see what the results look like.

Gorgeous, man. The model is great, as is the eye contact and the lighting. Though, I think this could be improved with a bit more contrast and sharpening. Keep up the good work.
