Description I need to do shading more often. It just makes things look better, even when the shading itself looks bad.

This is mostly a result of not drawing Sherri or Terri for quite a while, so I just had to do something simple to fill the gaps. Honestly, it's one of my best works to date. It would be even better if I knew how to show raindrops on the window, I mean decently. Infact, the rain itself was really hard to even get this meh-it's okay result.

So yeah, it's just Terri taking an early-ish bedtime. Sherri, being the borderline hyperactive girl she is, isn't tired yet so that's why it isn't so dark yet. Terri's a strange girl, she sleeps really easy in heavy rain but she's terrified by thunder and/or lightning. Both of which she notices instantly.

The twins get sent to bed at half-eight but they usually remain awake until midnight or even longer although what they do in that time is different. Sherri's activities usually involve playing video games that will later give her nightmares and spending quality time with her tortoises or rats while Terri often sneaks downstairs for a midnight snack/meal and plays with/shares food with the family dog (muzzles).

Should I continue with shading most of my stuff from now on?

(This is the most fun I ever had with the artist comments.

This is amazing. As you said, it's peaceful to look at, and the colour is fantastic; it's almost like it's right out of the show, especially with the rain outside.

Thanks, I wouldn't say it looks right out of the show, the shading is a bit too strong for that but that's how I like it. For some reason I really like these "Relaxing" pics.

When I said that, I was referring to the quality of the colour.

I think this is wonderful... and you did good on the shading.

About the raindrops though... maybe little specks of white with low opacity and blurred would work?

Aw thanks.

You mean the drops on the window? Why didn't I think of that?

Yeah, I mean those.

I have no idea... but you could maybe use that for later stuff.

Good idea. I might do another pic sometime with what Sherri was up to at the time, maybe then I can try it out.

That would look really good, like a kind of two-part picture or something, like I have done beforee on a different matter.

It would also be the first time doing anything with more than one part. The only problem is I'm not good with buildings and house layouts.

Hm... I am neither. But on the other hand, there will always be a first time doing something, so I sa full speed ahead!

Nice and peaceful pic.

Keep shading your work; pics look better with a feeling of depth (something I'm not good with).

Sadly, Sherri's likely to wake her up soon.

Well you certainly have the upper hand when it comes to detail and anatomy.

Sometimes, too much detail becomes messy...

Well you always manage to do it well, take "Soothing lullaby", "Success" or "Duff girls" for example.

I've actually been practicing for any other requests or trades from you with Sherri as a teen.

If you might have noticed, my art and character designs are getting a little smoother and less realistic, trying to get closer to the show's style (without making the kids look like fat six-year-old's, though).

I didn't notice...

I actually quite like the realism, I thought it was your chosen style or something. The way you done Sherri in "Payback is a bitch" still impresses me to this day, although she isn't so muscular but it still works and makes more sense really...

magik2005 In reply to SuperKoopaTroopa [2009-07-24 14:12:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I sort of made her too butch, I think. And the perspective was dodgy, something I've never got the hang of with anatomy...

The realistic (sort of) bodies are a carry-over from my younger years when I drew comic superheroes for fun. Drawing the adults of the Simpsons world is a little tricky to nail down, but I'll eventually get there...

It still looks great though, especially with the hair. I didn't see a problem with the perspective though. Funny thing is I thought of making Lisa a bit... masculine in nature during her teen years. Still a weakling and leftie-activist but rougher and a bit more foul tempered/mouthed until she eventually just goes back to normal after college. It would definately be unique.

Well when drawing adults most anatomical details remain the same, especially with women like miss Springfield and other generic "sexy girls", they just have noodly fingers and ball shaped toes.

I think you should keep shading More detail in a picture is usually better

Thanks for the input.

I'll definately keep the shading in future works (unless it's a massive group shot or something but I doubt I'll ever do one of those).

I love the shading and how you did the rain on the window.

I just love the eyelashes.

SuperKoopaTroopa In reply to sideshowbobfanatic [2009-07-22 20:27:17 +0000 UTC]

I actually wanted to have little raindrops on the window. I sadly didn't work out, you'd think they would had a tutorial on that somewhere.

Most definitely, it's a shame the animators rarely give them eyelashes when they are the one that, in my opinion, look best with them.

I think the shading looks great. The piece itself is very soothing to look at. Terri looks very peaceful and cute. I can relate to her. Usually when thunder or lightning comes I'm wide awake.

SuperKoopaTroopa In reply to 13foxywolf666 [2009-07-22 18:14:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, the shading invariably enhances art IMO. Fortunately she likes taking little naps every few days, it immediately makes her easier to handle then Sherri.

Usually I'm not bothered by harsh weather (apparently I slept through a minor earthquake about two years ago) but I bet you don't react as severely as she does.

Well I'm not scared of lightning or thunder (unless there's a possibility of a tornado) so I don't react as severe.
