I the comics, I think, her power is fueled by a combination of emotions and her demonic blood. She can siphon emotions from others, or use her own, to channel and control the raw power of her blood. But the more she channels, the more trouble she has and the more dangerous she becomes. At one point she was forced to go "full demon" against an adversary, and spent a week in the sick ward to get herself back on keel. She meditates a lot so as to keep the "power levels" even. 👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Later in life, she had better mastered how to channel and "store" power. She also learned how to harness and channel the positive emotions of herself and humans, and not just the negative ones. However, her powers would always be somewhat stunted, because she refused to draw "the demon" beyond a certain point, and had chosen to glean most of her "fuel" from her humanity instead. The demon packs more bang for the buck, but the human is more resilient, versatile, and easier to control. It's not unlike the two sides of the Force from Star Wars, now that I think of it. (It's a very common theme in Hindic mythology, which is a common theme in Star Wars, and is the inspiration for much of Raven.)
Before they rebooted the comic
So yes, the "hole" in her soul is the source of her power, but she found that there is more than one way to keep it filled. One method turned out to be love, actually. In the comics, she and Garfield were a (rocky) couple, but his love for her - and hers for him - was one of the main things that keep her grounded and focused. The other Titans were a big part of that as well; the whole "you're never alone" theme. I know that sounded sappy, but it's the best way to describe it.
Sorry this turned out to be so long, but she's a fun character to deconstruct.

It's just my own theory; there may be better ones out there. But, I'm glad it helped.

The way I understand it, Raven channels her powers by controlling her emotions. This results in her being very deadpan/neutral/unemotional seeming, and I believe that comes at a cost to her - for want of a better word - sanity. Also, Raven's demonic heritage weighs very heavily on her and contributes to her bleak outlook on life. I suppose that's more of a side-effect of her powers than a source, though.
