TBF that run of She-Hulk wasn't MEANT to be "empowering", given that it's a story about healing. Jennifer Walters went through a series of harrowing experiences, physical and emotional traumas, and came out changed for the worse. It's a PTSD narrative, and that's a lot more interesting than the same-old, same-old rut that She-Hulk usually falls into once her solo runs get cancelled too soon. And that's why you never even see the Hulk for the first third of the comic's run (as this also got canceled and then retitled and re-numbered, if you think creators are the ones killing comics, you're living in a dream world, but I digress) Any violence we SEE the Hulk doing would in some way be seen by someone as cathartic somehow. So instead it focused on the aftermath of her eruptions and what they were doing to Jen psychologically. Plus it's like a horror movie, you never show the monster in the first third or so.

Plus it also brought up the idea that maybe Jen LIKES to be the monster, or at least some part of her does. You didn't think a woman like Jennifer Walters would ONLY fantasize about being the Sensational Gammazon, did you? Didn't think there wasn't a part of her that longed to be a mindless force of destruction, a beast unleashed like her cousin. And the internal struggle, Jason Aaron took and ran with with the Avengers relaunch last year, where she's become even more monstrous in appearance, even more savage in mindset, and as seen in the latest issue, her internal struggle more violent. 'Course I wouldn't expect this story to end in the very near future, if there's one thing Jason Aaron loves it's a slow burn through dark territory building up to a wild climax. But in the meantime, I like me a She-Hulk plot with a bit more... meat? Weight? Something else that's a double-entendre for "muscle"?

Still doesn't give Aaron an excuse to tarnish Walters even further.

On the contrary; just because She-Hulk isn't a green amazon anymore doesn't mean the character is in any way diminished. Her Avengers story arc has been all about how there's not just one way to deal with her issues, it's no less legitimate to embrace your anger and become a monster that can destroy everything in your path than it is to be the way she defaulted to for the last 35 years. Besides, it kinda fits together with what Al Ewing's doing with Immortal Hulk and that's the kind of connectivity I can get behind.

I'd rather piss on Marvel (literally) for their bullshit. Other reason involves how Peter Parker has been treated for the past decade.

because making all your iconic characters "Legacy" names is fucking stupid and if they want to make comics to empower readers by identifying with their gender/race they should just make frigging NEW characters!
totally agree with you on this stinkbomb, poor She-Hulk.

It's pretty much like if they took the comic strip character Cathy and made it so that she turns into a grey, flat-chested She-Hulk when she gets mad. THAT is what the current (She)Hulk comic has become. I don't know how that is supposed to make the character "empowering".

The thing about She-Hulk was that she wasn't 'Hulk with boobs'. She has her own personality. Now in an attempt to make her more "empowered", they erase her personality, and revert her back to being 'Hulk with Boobs'.

I hope this shit bombs and she returns to being the She-Hulk we all know and love.

"I'm a minority and I was given another person's identity by the mandate of the older white guys who run the company b/c they believe that is what constitutes diversity when in reality what minorities actually want are to be represented by new and original characters. But as long as the company is run by white publishers, white editors in chief, mostly white personnel, with few minorities on staff to give input, this trend will continue (and people will continue to blame minorities for stealing other people's identities, not the white editors and publishers who made the decision)."

Minorities don't want to be second grade versions of Jimmy Olsen or Captain America, we don't want "hand me down" characters, but hey, that's what Dan DiDio (DC) and Dan Buckley (Marvel) decided and they're in charge.

I don't think it matters if someone is white or not. I for one am white, but I am also a Christian, and so I know too well what it is to be a minority (and no, just because someone says they're a Christian means they are one. We are still a minority).

Anyway, I think it comes down to their mindset. Take Dynamite's Red Sonja for example. Volume 1 was written by a man, and yet she was not portrayed as a sex object, or at least she couldn't sleep with someone without losing her abilities if they could not best her in combat. Then, Volume 2 (which was written by a woman) and Volume 3 (also written by a woman) show Sonja as someone who sleeps around and gets drunk (though she did get drunk in Volume 1, just not as much). What I'm saying is that we don't need someone who is that specific minority, but someone who wants to show them in a positive and good way.

A female character doesn't need a female writer, only a writer who knows how to show the character in a positive and different way. A black character doesn't need a black writer, only a writer who knows how show them in good way. Etc. etc.

Though, I'm sure replacing some of those older white males would benefit us all.

Another thing, they also need to make sure they don't focus on the character being a minority, otherwise that will create less diversity, and more inequality, like what they've done with Iceman, the about 70% of the Young Avengers, and Alex Danvers on the Supergirl TV series (which once you realise that the actress is apparently a Christian and is married with 3 children, it gets really awkward).

I agree 100%. However I made no such argument to the contrary.  I in no way argued that we need minority writers to write minority characters. I do however argue that Marvel and DC need minority editors and people of color in the upper echelons of management.  I was replying to who erroneously believed that minorities and women are the one's instigating all these changes that seems not to like, when in fact nearly every one of those changes was instigated by an editorial staff that is almost all white males. I believe if there were more minority editors attending these "editorial retreats" that Marvel and DC bosses go on to do their long term planning, we'd have less "identity theft" as  puts it. Because, as I said, we don't want second hand, hand me down characters, and those minority editors would raise that point. We want diversity BUT we don't want "black Captain America" (after Captain America quits) or "black Batman" (after Batman quits) or "black Snapper Carr." That's not diversity. That's pandering. We didn't ask for those things. They were mandated by a room full of people who probably look more like than they do me.

It wasn't an argument, I was just putting my view across.

I do agree that Marvel especially needs to include more minorities in their editorial department and such. Which is why I prefer DC and Dynamite. Most of Dynamite's staff come from all over, mainly from USA, Philippines and Brazil, with a few British and Mexicans as well, though most of those are artists, mainly because Dynamite have a rather small editorial department. Anyway, though I think more minority staff in larger roles would be better, it would also be better if they could do the job. Too many people want diversity in the workplace (mainly governments), but focus too much on their public image rather than getting someone who can do the job.

All in all, you have some great points and I completely agree.

I do have to admit, making Laura Kinney the new Wolverine was a good idea after Logan died. One of the few things Marvel recently did that I actually like.

I actually agree with you.

 -     White guys decide to change white hero to black to get on CNN and appease         themselves
 -     Other white fans hate it and get angry and call it "anti-white"
 -     Black fans, who had no say so in this, reply, "WTF? I didn't ask for this!"

The reason most characters are/were white, is because most of the creators are/were white.
Creators "write what they know".

Simple solution is to hire more people from diverse backgrounds to actually give a fresh perspective. I mean people who actually love the medium, not token hires, put on only "black" books, or feminists put on "women" books to push an agenda ahead of telling a STORY.

Morality plays that make a reader ponder something they may have never considered before is fine. Even encouraged.

Propaganda that TELLS the audience WHAT TO THINK is BS.

PAY CREATORS good royalties to create NEW characters, instead of all of these legacy heroes.

That will be good for ALL creators, white or not. And the fans.

Besides, how many Spider-Women do you need anyway?!?

Blame it on minorities or the white editors and publishers who made the decision(personally I blame the fans also). either way we minorities ourselves have to be aware ond not a sheep who will support perpetuate the problem with minority characters even further. Especially in recent years.
