Awesome once again and I gotta say I love the way you draw as it gives me sort of a Chinese or Japanese Painting feeling with your artwork.
Also Drawing those scales must have been a pain. XD Love Godzilla but I wouldn't really wanna draw him with all of those scales and such.
BTW I get the feeling you combined some versions of Godzilla into this one, mainly his 2014 and 2000 versions, am I right?

It really set the stage for my later appreciation of giant monsters, like the ones H.P. Lovecraft wrote about, and others.Β I feel like I'm going to do something, maybe art, maybe a book, to do with giant monsters one day, but the idea is still formulating ... we'll see

Hahaha, yeah I feel the same as well. I love the work of H.P.Lovecraft, and all the beasts of incomprehensible power and magnitude, and his writing really opened my mind to a different way to think about the world outside myself, and how if I delve too deep, I will get lost in the madness of the infinite terrible possibilities that could be floating around by the stars, or in the very fabric of reality. He had a very romantic, in my opinion, and beautiful take on giant monsters before giant monsters were even a thing, and there are only a few interpretations of enormous animals capable of withstanding our manpower that really stand the test of time like Lovecraft's, and Godzilla is definitely one of them! Giant monsters are something that intrigue me, I love how they look, I am terrified by their roars, and I believe they have such untapped potential, something being overlooked that makes them so much more than gigantic, nuclear versions of the animals that inhabit our planet, ready to make a quick meal out of the empire state building!

Yes, his concepts are really mind bending.Β I love that he incorporated the whole "Ancient Aliens" ideas before that was even talked about.Β The 2014 Godzilla movie also took this approach, and said that Godzilla predated the dinosaurs, which I found interesting.Β
I also loved Pacific Rim.Β It was not the most thought provoking film, and I understand some of the criticisms, but it had giant robots fighting giant monsters, and that was more than enough for me Β

Again, I have to agree with you, I am a fan of Pacific Rim. Not only were there giant robots battling giant monsters, but the visuals used in the movie were awesome! I admired how they used Earthly animals as the reference for all the kaiju, but combined them with other beasts into chimaera of sorts that made them look like they weren't from around here at all! In which I mean, it's hard to fathom them without having seen them first, if that makes sense? Also, I do feel like they did add a Lovecraftian touch to each of the Kaiju giving them a bizarre and cosmic presence, kind of a way of saying "Hi! You don't know us, as you don't know a lot about anything and everything that encompasses and twists through this continuum you live in, but we are the neighbors, and we really like your house! I think we are going to live here, in your house that is. I hope you don't mind that, but who cares! Your insignificance to us is relative to your height! Hahaha, and to think that we possibly are, and are, even smaller than what lays beyond us, your fight is a hopeless one! Good luck out there!" I hope that made sense. Hahaha. This seems a little off topic, but not so much as to completely catch you off guard, but what do you think of the 2014 Godzilla movie?

Perfectly on topic
I liked it, (Godzilla 2014) but maybe not as much as I wanted to.Β I was kind of hoping that the "bad" monsters would have been something from the old films, like Rodan perhaps ... I do want to see it again though, so that's saying something.
You are spot on with Pacific Rim.Β I think you pointed out something important, which maybe the film-makers could have used to make an even better film, which is the history/background of the Kaiju.Β They did hint at the bigger, more ominous beings at the end there, but the were never really portrayed as villains, more as simply forces of nature, or animals.Β That scene at the end hinted at an intelligence, but it was not capitalized.Β But then, how can you represent a completely alien intelligence without giving it human qualities ... that's the challenge, right?
This is where Lovecraft was a genius, as he never really portrayed his monster, but just hinted at their existence.Β This worked great in his books, but it could never come across well as a film, at least not yet.Β I am still really disappointed that "At the Mountains of Madness" didn't get made.

That's one of the reasons I love Lovecraft's work so much! I always want to see the monster. Not only do I think creature designs are bomb AF, but I want to see what is that is making me get these goosebumps as I watch the heroes on screen fight to survive against whatever thing is after them. With Lovecraft though, Β I don't get that, I am not able feel my resolution to the problem as I gaze upon the monster and see that it is in fact a physical entity, I can only guess and assume what it is that makes things go bump in the night, and in the mind. The only thing that he does describe is the absolute terror and unimaginable horror that comes form being within the same vicinity of these beings from beyond our stars, and how maddening it is to be able to witness the awesome might that are the elder gods and old ones.
I really like what you said about not being able to honestly represent an alien intelligence. I don't know what else I can add to that, but it really makes you think of the endless possibilities of what an alien might do, might be able to do, and is able to do given it has a corporeal form and human level intellect.Β
Also, I do agree with you about Godzilla and having actual Toho kaiju redesigned and in the movie like Godzilla instead of the M.U.T.O.s which weren't terrible, but I wasn't awestruck by them either. I wish though that they would have made Godzilla more animal, and less intelligent. I think it would have been cool, in a sick way I guess, if they would have showed what devastation he can cause just by walking around and not giving two flying fucks (pardon my french) about human beings in general. It wasn't like he was friends with them or anything, but that moment when the main guy looked into his eyes, I kind of died inside and thought they should have made him less "relatable with his expressions, and more terrifying in the power he possesses.

I think some folks do not get the idea of terror that Lovecraft's work really inspires.Β We are bombarded with alien movies, books games and other things these days to the point that we are kind of immune to the fear the would actually produce in a "real" encounter.Β That's what Lovecraft really captured.Β
Stories of alien abduction, though I'm not 100% sure they are true, do have a resemblance to this, in that they describe the paralyzing fear of encountering something from another world.Β This is something hard to convey in a giant monster movie.Β I think there are other alien genres that do it better, like some X-Files episodes, that great film "Fire in the Sky" and others, even "Alien" was pretty terrifying.Β I would love to see this kind of real terror combined with the lovecraftian monsters, in a movie format.Β The best example I've seen was the video game "Dark Corners of the Earth," which really did a great job of conveying the mind numbing fear that these encounters would produce.Β
But Godzilla is different.Β I think he was intended as a horrible, scary monster at first, but people really liked him, so they made him good.Β I always liked the idea of a monster as defender of earth.Β The unintended destruction to human infrastructure was okay in Godzilla, probably better (worse) in Pacific Rim, if I remember correctly.Β
I am definitely getting some ideas from this conversation.Β My next children's book will have a center of the earth theme, with giant monsters and possible giant robots (to fight said monsters).Β Β It won't be as frightening as all that, butΒ I can't wait to start sketching these things out, I just have to finish the current book first

The current book is the sequel to my "Adventures of the Salamander" series.Β I've got a bunch of illustrations from both stories/series here on DeviantArt, under book illustrations.Β They are sort of rambling adventures that take the main character and his friends to all sorts of different places, each story being made up of several smaller "episodes" with an overarching main storyline.Β It's many genres all stuck together, sci-fi, fantasy, steampunk etc... I just enjoy writing and coming up with fun illustrations

Your drawings/work have such variety! I am so amazed by not only your skill, but your versatility. I was looking through your work and going through the "Adventures of the Salamander" series, I saw your piece "Elevator" and in the "More by MKSchmidt" section I clicked on that horrifying picture of the hero fighting some sort of necro-Dragon-horror thing. I mean not to classify your work in any way or belittle it, but in describing your work I may use words you don't agree with, they are just how I would describe it, but anyway, your work went from light, playful, and colorful to downright horrifying, dark, and adult in such a way that had I not known it was your work, I would have completely thought that they were from separate artists! To me, that is an achievement, you are an incredible artist.
