Yeah, this episode really bothered me. Starlight needed to learn that stripping her friends of their free will was wrong? Seriously? That's really a lesson that needed to happen? It's like how Rainbow Dash in Double Rainboom learned that stealing is wrong. It's so basic, it's insulting.
Also, it doesn't make any sense because if Starlight is good now, why is she still doing things she would do when she was evil? You would assume her changing her alignment would mean her not doing those things anymore. It would be like if you had a character who was evil and a murder, and they became good, but they still murdered innocent people. In the same way, Starlight becoming good means she doesn't do the things she did when she was evil anymore. You cannot separate alignment from actions like that to the point where I didn't even think it was possible that we could get an episode like this. You cannot have a character be evil, turn good, but still do the same things they did before and have not doing those things anymore be separate lessons they have to learn besides learning to not be evil.

Starlight Glimmer was Lawful Evil, if we are talking alignment. That means she did evil things with good intentions. She honestly believed removing ponies cutie marks and mind controlling them makes their lives better.
Even though Starlight is now trying Twilights method, she is still thinking in extremes (albeit less) and she is using magic on ponies without their consent out of habit.
To use your murder example, he might not murder innocent people, but he would still murder non-innocent people.
