Description
For this list i will not be including 3rd Parties that were previously in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U since this Switch game could still be a port of the Wii U game, which would include all of the same 3rd party characters again. And let's be honest, Sonic is coming back regardless.

Every time a Super Smash Bros. title is shown at E3, we usually get a 3rd party character announcement. So here's a bunch of character's i'd like to see, and reasons why i do or don't think they are a possibility.

1. Crash

Mildly Possible

Right now, Crash has the best chance he's ever had at being in a Smash title. While his games have been on Nintendo systems for almost two decades, Crash made a surprise appearance at the March Nintendo Direct with the N. Sane Trilogy port coming to Switch. They even said so much as "Gaming icon crashes onto Switch" and 3rd party Smash characters are always big iconic characters. Well... except Bayonetta. Almost every 3rd party/character wish list you can find include Crash for this Switch title. It's now or never. Crash for Smash.

2. Snake

Highly Unlikely

Snake is one of my favorite, if not my number 1 favorite character. So seeing him on Brawl alongside Sonic was one of the best moments in games for me. Snake's return is something that seems to get more and more unlikely as time goes by. After the fallout of Konami and Kojima, Snake appears almost impossible for a return to the mascot brawler due to Sakurai and Kojima's friendship. The Metal Gear name is slowly falling with it's newest title, Metal Gear Survive. (Which isn't bad by the way. Sure, it's not much of a "Metal Gear" game but then again neither was The Phantom Pain.) Along with everyone jumping on the bandwagon to hate Konami and everything they produce. I imagine Nintendo/Sakurai would want to stay far away from the negativity surrounding the character's company. Even though i'm sure if Kojima was asked if he'd like to see Snake in Smash for Switch, He'd probably say yes. If a Konami character is granted access to join the game, it will undoubtedly fall into the hands (round stubs?) of Bomberman. I don't think Nintendo will go anywhere near Konami for this game though. If Snake did return, i can see his up special being changed to the Fulton Recovery System, kind of like the Villager.

3. Chris Redfield

Unlikely

Resident Evil is Capcom's next biggest franchise that hasn't been represented in a Smash game yet. Titles in the series have even had prominent exclusive releases on Nintendo systems. These exclusive games were eventually ported to various other consoles later on of course, but Nintendo and Capcom have a great relationship. Chris however doesn't seem like a possibility. Mainly because of the use of realistic firearms. As evidenced by Snake in Brawl, he was worked around to use his CQC fighting rather than use a silenced pistol, an assault rifle, or even a non-lethal tranquilizer gun. For some reason explosives are allowed though. Anyway, a Resident Evil character would probably need to use some of the more realistic weaponry for their move set. Sure Chris can punch, kick, and even knife his way through enemies and opponents with ease. But having him in the game either having Chris standing without his readied pistol in hand or having the pistol in hand and never use it just wouldn't look right. Chris could still work if they restricted him to his combat, and giving him explosives such as a grenade/rocket launcher like Snake. It would just feel like they're dumbing him down from his true potential, especially if compared to his Marvel vs Capcom moveset. If there ever were a Resident Evil character, it would more likely be Wesker since he doesn't need to use weapons.

4. Rayman

Highly Possible

Rayman for Smash Wii U is perhaps what Mega Man was for Brawl. He missed his chance in the last game, so he'll get his shot next time, or at least i hope so. Rayman was already featured in Smash Wii U as a trophy, Such a massive troll move by Sakurai himself. Ubisoft has always been a big supporter of Nintendo's new wacky systems and Rayman has a perfect move set for a Smash game, all of which can be seen by simply playing Rayman Origins/Legends. Switch even had the weird Ubisoft/Nintendo crossover of Mario and Rabbids. In reality, instead of Rayman, i fully expect to see a Rabbid show up as the new 3rd Party character, complete with it's Kingdom Battle arm cannon. Plus a Rabbid amiibo would work perfectly fine, while Rayman would be forced to have big bulky pillars holding up each of his limbs. So if Ubisoft gets a character. It'll be a Rabbid... please don't let it be a Rabbid... Throw in Ezio or Sam Fisher before the Rabbids.

5. Scorpion

Impossible

Scorpion is an iconic character, easily one of fighting games most recognizable characters in general right next to Ryu. Mortal Kombat has even been on countless Nintendo systems before, although not so much in recent years. Scorpion already has a moveset perfect for Smash just like Ryu, he could have his classic "Get over here!" set to a grab, or maybe even a special. However, Mortal Kombat glorifies murdering your opponent in brutal and over the top ways. I don't think Nintendo/Sakurai would want a character from such a violent gory series to be featured in a game with their friendly cartoon characters. Bayonetta and Snake both have their share of gory brutal moments within their own series, but it was never a main focus like Mortal Kombat. Scorpion would also need his final smash to be a Fatality, of course it couldn't be one of the more modern style ones where he cuts the opponent up in multiple ways. So something much more tame, and there is no way they would ever allow Scorpion to fatality Mario, or any Nintendo character, no matter how unviolent it was. So Scorpion joining is an absolute no.

6. Banjo

Almost Impossible but Questionable

Microsoft recently has been very open to crossplay with Nintendo, and letting their franchises be featured in multiple places such as Minecraft on both Playstation and Nintendo systems. They also allowed Banjo to have a few Game Boy Advance games after purchasing Rare. Banjo has even appeared on more Nintendo consoles than he has Xbox. Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, Has stated two times now that he thinks it would be cool to see and is willing to let Banjo appear in a Smash game. Now there's obviously more to it than just saying it. The good news is It does show a possibility for Banjo showing up, but the fact that Banjo is a first party character for Xbox now makes me think he is off limits. Surely Sakurai wouldn't want to put a competitor's exclusive character in a game celebrating Nintendo's history. Even if they originally were Nintendo. Sega was no longer a console competitor when Sonic was added, but Banjo currently still is owned by Microsoft. Though the relationship of these two companies and Phil Spencer's acknowledgement of the demand do make it questionable if he could show up.

7. Lara Croft

Highly Unlikely

Tomb Raider is a hugely iconic franchise. It started off more on Playstation's side, but has been featured on several Nintendo consoles. Her classic hyper sexualized appearance in the past may have seemed like a roadblock in Smash, but since Bayonetta, anything is possible. Lara has since been rebooted to a more dark mature style. She has a new arsenal of weaponry outside of the original dual pistols and realistic firearms. The pickaxe could be used as a standard weapon for her smash attacks, and the bow and arrow as her specials. To me, Lara seems a bit too realistic to be in Smash, at least in her reboot form, but i thought the same thing with Nathan Drake in Playstation All-Stars. If they were to choose a Square Enix character for the Switch game it would most likely be Cloud again, or Geno this time. I don't see Lara having a chance at appearing in any Smash title.

8. Nightmare

Highly Unlikely

I don't really know why i feel Nightmare doesn't have a chance to appear. Soulcalibur is not often represented when Namco has crossover appearances. Soulcalibur is usually the one having guest characters join their game. The series isn't quite as popular as it's fellow fighting franchises either. Nightmare being the face of the games would fit perfectly into a Smash game though. I can imagine him feeling like what Ganondorf should play like if he had a sword. Really heavy, slow, and powerful with a mid range move set due to his sword's length. Nightmare would probably be one of the most powerful Smash characters we've seen, (I guess Overpowser takes that spot right now.) but there are other characters from Namco's collection i see joining way before Soulcalibur even gets considered. Such as Heihachi and the return of Pac Man, Possibly even Dig Dug could make an appearance or a Digimon. I feel like Pac Man will return in every Smash game from now on like Sonic.

9. Hayabusa

Koei Tecmo and Nintendo have had a great partnership even through the hard times of the Wii U. Nintendo trusted them with their characters and they created the generally popular Hyrule Warriors, and again with Fire Emblem Warriors, they also developed Fatal Frame for Wii U. I hoped Hayabusa would have shown up as the final DLC character for Wii U as a result of this. Maybe he'll get his time to shine this time? The Ninja Gaiden series has appeared on most Nintendo consoles in some form and is a quite iconic franchise itself. I'll honestly be surprised if we don't see anything Tecmo related in this Switch Smash. Whether it be a trophy, character, or a sticker if they bring those back.

10. Dante

Dante really should have been the last DLC character for Wii U instead of Bayonetta, but we did already have 2 Capcom characters and Devil May Cry is probably the least Nintendo related series on this list. DMC's affiliation has been mostly with Sony. Dante has rarely appeared on a Nintendo system in general, and when he does, it's usually a weird crossover game for a handheld device. Though it is similar to Cloud's appearances on Nintendo systems. The Final Fantasy franchise itself had been on Nintendo frequently in the past. None of the main DMC titles have ever been on a Nintendo system, the HD collection didn't even make it's way to Switch. Dante was also already featured on Playstation All-Stars. I don't know if it's intentional or not, but the two game's appeared to stay away from characters their competitor's already had. For example, Brawl had Snake so PS All-Stars had Raiden. PS All-Stars had Heihachi and Dante so Smash Wii U had Ryu and Bayonetta. It's likely Ryu and Mega Man would return as Capcom reps before Dante, as well as Bayonetta being the alternate version of him.

11. Doom Slayer

Unlikely but Questionable

Doom is probably the most odd/out of place series on the list. It is still a massively iconic franchise and is believed to have pioneered the First Person Shooter genre. Doom has had many of it's games appear on Nintendo platforms sooner or later. Doom is a gory game with realistic-ish guns and some other weird "Pew Pew" space styled guns, but does have the berserk mode where the Slayer will go into a melee spree for a limited time. His move set could be based off of that to avoid the firearms. Bethesda has had major support for the Switch so far. With the newest 2016 Doom on Switch, as well as Skyrim and Wolfenstein 2 (assuming it's not cancelled) I wouldn't be surprised to see Fallout 4, Prey, and Evil within 2 show up at Bethesda's E3 this year announcing one or them all for Switch. Though if any Bethesda character does show up, it's the safest bet it would be Dovahkiin with his standard sword and shield.
