Battle Specs: Quetsol proudly commands the offensive role that most fire-starters accommodate, boasting high special attack and speed stats and decent physical attack...but at the cost of having somewhat frail defenses. Especially when it comes to Rcok-type attacks, something other certain Fire/Flying types know all too well. Though, fortunately, it also wields the boons of having the rare Multiscale ability for its hidden talent, which helps significantly on the defensive front.
Aside from the move spread of your typcial fire-type (Flamethrower, Overheat, Fire Blast, Solarbeam, etc.), it also holds some of the neat tricks reserved for other serpentine 'mons, such as Glare, Coil, and Poison Fang, as well some more unique moves like Feather Dance, Thunder Fang, Sky Attack, Fire Lash, Hurricane, Dragon Pulse, Steel Wing, and even Extrasensory. A kit to be sure, but not exactly a lot of ways to deal with its common weaknesses...with one exception, of course.
And that exception comes in the form of its signature move, Solar Flare. At first glance, you'd be forgiven for thinking it as a slightly stronger Heat Wave, even down to it hitting all Pokemon on the field. But what makes it interesting is its secondary effect. Upon using it, the air in the battlefield becomes so heated, that any Water and Ice-type attacks are unable to be used the following turn. It's a move that temporarily NULLIFIES one of Quetsol's three weaknesses. The effect may only last one turn, but that alone gives Quetsol a significant edge against the Water-types that would normally cause problems for it...and screws over the Ice-types it normally dominates even further, I guess.
Bottom line, Quetsol is a powerful and dangerous opponent. Underestimate it at your peril...or just throw rocks at it, I guess. Whatever works.
Artist's Notes: And so, from the skies above, Quetsol descends onto the stage as the final evo of Hissear...and already, you might have noticed a pretty big change from the original (aside from the design): Fire/FLYING instead of Fire/DRAGON. I honestly went back and forth on this a lot when conceptualizing this line when discussing its typing, but as you can see, I ultimately went with Fire/Flying. As much as I love Dragons, I'll fully admit that having a Dragon-typed STARTER would be very unbalanced. Never mind the fact that Dragon resists Grass, Fire, AND Water, but aside from the raw strength they have, the one types they're actually super-effective against is...themselves. It's probably the same mindset that made Charizard, another very dragon-esque Pokemon part-Flying as well.
Veteran watchers of mine might also call out another Pokemon from the original dex that just so happens to share similar origins to what Quetsol here is based off of, except THAT design is ALSO getting a complete design overhaul, so there won't be any clashing concepts here. I promise. :3
ANYWAYS, with all that said and done, I hope you all liked this giant fire snek, and I'll see you next time to finish off the starter trio! Take care, guys! ^_^
