Description This is the first completed render I've done in Reality (which uses Luxrender). I've been practicing using it for the last few months, but finally got the lighting to an acceptable setting. I'm using a mesh light and a direct light (turned down very very low).

I normally don't ask for critique, but I want to get some from those who have experience with the product. I want to learn as much as I can before I can have complete faith in using it. If you're wondering, here's a comparison between the render through DAZ (with the lights from the last Syris render unchanged) and the one through Luxrender. [link]

Done in DAZStudio Reality.

I've seen the two renders... To my eyes (!) , the render here is better than under Daz, but here the eyes are too flat and some reflections effects are better on Daz render for this part...This is an important point in pin-up or character pics to give the feelings of the character is looking at you and catch you in the scene...
Very good job !!

Yeah. It's kinda one of the things I'm learning how to get right. But I am happy with how it turned out, especially the skin.

Thanks!

No critique here, I think it looks great, I use Lux too (except through a freebie called LuxRenderDS).

On the technical note, it looks like you really got the clothes looking great as well, as their specular settings are pretty much set properly (the way cotton clothes light up, even black clothes). In your DS render, they look ok, but the shirt's specular settings aren't really set right (just a tad too shiny instead of a "cotton" feel), the jean's specular is apparently set to not have any specular at all (I get that settings from Daz3D products which are very wrong and just look "blah") looks like it's only the textures from the jeans with highlighted areas instead of natural specular settings. And something's really blocking the skin from looking great as well, can't really pin point, but I do know your light isn't as bright in DS as it is in Lux. Your Lux version is a lot better with improved lights and surface settings.

And yes, I have experience in both DS/3Delight and DS/LuxRenderDS/Lux, just check out my gallery...

Again, I didn't change the light settings from a previous render (seen [link] ). So I really didn't do anything for that one. I wanted to use it as more of an example of the difference in quality between the two. Though, I'm quite happy with the results of how the previous render looked (considering the many changes I've made with the character over the last few years).

And thanks for the compliment. I really didn't know if I nailed it in Lux, but I'm glad I got something.

You're off to a great start actually I've seen some pretty bad start lol, so that's a plus BTW the character herself does look very nice Your creation?

I believe lights will react different between the two programs, especially considering that Lux "resets" lights to 1.00 (100% in DS) and you'd have to either reset the brightness in Reality or during renders in Lux. Maybe that's why your Lux render was brighter? I haven't played with distant lights much though, but really I don't like them since you can't re-size them to have proper shadows (they're all hard edge), I usually use mesh lights or the sun occasionally.

Hey, I looked at both renders (your current link in your respond and the link from that image), they both look good. I do like the current clothes better though lol, they're more natural looking.

And you're very welcome, friend!

Yep. My character. When I changed her skin and her visible face was shown without the white, I was like "Whoa. I need to work on that again." And I got it to good again.

I used one mesh light, which worked great on its own, and one distant light, which just burned the image. So I turned the gain down to 0.05-ish so I could get enough brightness on her (some shadowing). I only wish I had turn down the diffuse for her shirt in reality (it's supposed to be darker), but either way, it works for her.

I saw a comment suggesting to turn down the diffuse either color to about 185 185 185 or strength to about .80, as they tend to shine more then anticipated and take up more render time if you don't... something like that, so I've been turning the strengths down on the hair and the color down on the characters, seems to turn out good. Learned that at the Lux forums. I actually like how the shirt turned out, but darker is nice too.

If I recall, the distant lights are very bright anyways, against mesh lights. What I do actually so you have more light control is instead of using a distant light, I use a large plane mesh light at a distance. I actually upped it in two of my renders and really turned my render into a nice, soft lighting scene ("Lovely Lady" and "Sabrina Portrait" in gallery). Wish mesh lights didn't take up too much time, I'd like to load quite a few around the target just to have good lighting control and to see which settings look best As for outside renders, I use a sky dome (that also acts as a mesh light with reverse normals active and the sky image loaded in the light's color) and the sun, as well as IBL, can get some nice results!
