Description
...another rough sketch of a character from my project; "A Tale of REM", a fantasy I've been developing for some time."Rik-Tik" was influenced in part by the Rudyard Kipling story "Rikki Tikki Tavi" from the "Jungle Book".
He is an ally of "Nod's" in the land of REM.
*I will most likely end up changing this character's name, has been brought to my attention that he shares a similar name to a character from "Tellos" the fantasy series from the late great artist Mike Weiringo.
*Graphite on bristol

thanks Manda, my fantasy story "REM" has all sorts of creatures in it, hell even the plants and trees have personality as well as the very sky itself and all from the vivid imagination of a 12 yr old boy(Shane).
The main challenge for me other than writing the story is to effectively render it artwise on paper-it will be released in a graphic novel format and although it is a fantasy it will have some mature themes within it-I'll keep all my deviant friends updated on further developments on "REM" as they occur.

yeah i am deffo interested...i l LOVE fantasy stories like that. I am writing a fairy tale- type story i would love to turn into a graphic novel. it's along the lines of Stardust or Princess bride....I have been working on it for over a year. I have conflicting interests...i love to write and draw....art is where my heart is but i think creativity is not biased and comes forth in all ways it can. so i write for a while then try to draw it too and it takes FOREVER! lol
i am sure you know the feeling....but you have years of experience over me and i am sure you move along at a quicker pace

well it is proving to be quite the challenge cause my vision of the characters in my mind is proving more difficult to actually transfer onto paper- especially the young girl character which I have modeled after a real person-and the writing is especially challenging, it is a fantasy but does have quite a bit of detail in it as well particularly in the description of REM itself and it's many varied inhabitants...
I am not very experienced at all when it comes to writing and as far as speed goes...well I've been in various stages of developing this particular story since I was a teenager.
"KUDU-MAN" is much more recent, only a couple of years old, and there is another project waiting in the wings-but I weant to get these two off first and see where they land...

I have a story i thought of in 2002 that hasn't reached fruition yet in my head...i get little tid bits but i cant get it to flush out, solidly like my fairy tale.... it's about an angel that God is punishing because he doesn't want to damn him to hell... he's my baby....my first real character that i have gotten attached to and have struggled with the longest. there is alot there but i think the timing is wrong with him and i am waiting for him to sprout...he's still germinating lol
The fairy tale hit me over the head. I actually woke up and was inspired by a dream and every for a few weeks it grew and grew. I have the entire thing finished in a summary and in my head....but it's such a long detailed thing it's taking forever to get onto paper.
The story book i was asked to do by my baby bro is something that popped into my head too...for me i am not worried about the writing since it will be really simple and easy to read and understand...i just want great illustrations.
as a struggling artist, i have spent all my life drawing and painting trying to become a great artist....the writing started more recently...about a decade ago and it's hard to do both.
you have so much experience...seriously...i am jealous of your knowledge...i am sure your stories will be brilliant. i am learning that if i don't try too hard little things pop up as inspiration. like my sam keith slump...if i focus too hard on what i am missing i miss even more.

-do not let your insecurity as an artist affect your progress on your stories, one doesn't have to be a "great" artist to effectively tell a story, one can have the simplest in art styles and still tell a great and memorable tale, just look at Jeff Smith's "Bone" and the more recent hit "the Mouse Guard" by David Peterson just to name a few.
I too am a struggling artist...have been most of my life, only now at the ripe old age of 43 am I starting to kick it into high gear as far as my ideas go-looking back is frustrating, just knowing how much time I have wasted not capitalizing on my youth, unfortunately I am, by nature a procrastinator and it's taking all my will to get motivated to the point of getting up early each morning or staying up quite late writing out some pages to one of my stories or do layouts on some of the pages.
...and experience and knowledge are pretty much worthless if you can't use it to your advantage-you've heard the saying "if I only knew then what I know now" rings truer than you know-I would love to go back 20 years with what I know now and have another chance-I'm not in the grave yet, and I still have my health and creative spirit and GOD willing I will be allowed enough time to "leave my mark" as it were-to see my vision come to fruition.
I'm no J.K.Rowling, I have no dilusions of grandeur fame ,and awards swimming about my head, I just want to see my own work in print and see how people respond to it. I am an artist first and foremost and am ecstatic and lucky that people seem to like my work , now I need to concentrate on being an author which in my humble opinion is much more difficult, mainly cause I am new at it.
You are still quite young Amanda, take advantage of it and even though you may feel that you are not ready artistically yet, do not wait too long or before you know it you too will be 43 and be asking yourself; "Damn, where did the time go?"
Your work is very good, I have seen stories published where the interior art was comprised mainly of stick figures("tales of the Beanworld"), so do not doubt your own ability to tell a story effectively solely because you feel you're not ready artistically-do not limit yourself that way, imagination is limitless.
Shit! I should write a book or become a politician-I talk too damn much
You can do it kid- I have faith in you, keep me updated on your story ideas and I eagerly await your published work(s).
-peace

here's the thing...i am all over the place...i haven't got a difinitive style yet. look at my fgallery...i am all over the place.... i have to nail it if i want to be taken seriously....i can do detailed work...i just don't do it consistantly lol
*erg* i guess in that sense i am a typical girl....flighty. which is unusual for me cuz i usually stick with things pretty well....art is a mood for me....i get "in the mood" for a type of art medium and style....like batman in inks or abstract watercolors...you know? and lemme tell you about not wanting to waste any more time...i started art school at the merry age of 25 b/c i was trying to be "sensible" and did three years of nursing school bfore i said F- it and started doing what muh heart told me...
thanks for the advice! I love getting insight from the pros!!

-thanks Sheba, glad you like.
these kind of characters are rather new to me so I am still working on them trying to get them down to a science-still have issues with drawing "dog legs" but I'm working on it...

-thanks B...he's a little fella too about the size of a real Mongoose maybe a tad larger-but he makes up for his size in courage and fierceness.
I gave him conventional boots at first but then decided that this would encumber him in certain situations.....see this is why it takes me way too long to get something going I think too hard on the design and logic of characters and stories-have to constantly remind myself that it is a Fantasy-a comic book etc...
