Thank you--I wanted to use muted tones for a scout. If I'd had more time, I would have loved to do a sorcery in brighter colors, but oh well.

Thank you! I wasn't thinking Disney at all, but now that you said it I can totally see it. My roots are showing

I don't mean to rain on your parade or anything, but I just don't understand how this made the cut.

Bitter much? Because you really sound like you DO mean to rain on my parade, and the parade of most of the finalists.
I agree that there are some really awesome pictures that didn't make the top 25, including some that are better than mine; I certainly didn't expect to make the top 25. But I'm not a judge, and neither are you. It seems clear that they had some specific things they were looking for, and I'd imagine that they plan on actually using the winners' pictures, which also affected their choices. If I had to guess, I'd say that one of the reasons I beat some others out is because this appears to be a game that is oriented to all ages, including kids, and my picture is PG, where as many entries were not.

That could very well be the case. Nothing against you, but your piece just seemed far too simple.
I personally am not one for anime-styled work, but others like it so I'll keep my mouth shut. However, while your piece has colors that work quite nicely together, I really just don't see why it was chosen over other work (I knew I'd never get in, so it isn't about me being bitter).

My picture is simple, compared to the others. And there were plenty of entries that I saw and went "damn, I wish I'd painted that." But I've seen alot of people complaining that the semifinalists' work is too complicated (I assume they aren't talking about mine). Many people point out that alot of the semifinalists have fancy backgrounds, while the contest is supposed to be about the character. Perhaps one or more of the judges liked that the picture is simple. Perhaps they liked the color scheme. Perhaps they felt my picture blended into the pre-existing game art better than some others. Perhaps they felt it was more commercial than others (I assume the winners will be posted on the game site or in a promo somewhere).
The simple matter of the fact is that art is very objective. One person can look at a piece of art and see something beautiful, and others look at the same piece and see something amateurish or ugly. And, in the end, what the judges are looking for isn't necessarily the greatest work of art in an objective sense, but the one that will best suit their needs.

I'll admit, I completely forgot about the possibility that there might be a judge with completely different tastes.

The thing about art is, it's whatever you want it to be
Of course, it could just be that I designed my character to fit in with the world and characters they have already created. Maybe I misunderstood the rules, but I thought that was what they wanted? Not for me to redefine what a "scout" is, but to just come up with my own original scout that might work in the game.

I like the elegance and simplicity of this entry, as many others are saying, but also the fact that it has a lot of personality, too. Your scout seems so pensive and aware, as a scout should be.
Good luck to both of us!

Thanks! I like yours, as well. I'm just in love with his cape, and for some reason he really reminds me of Samurai Jack (the art style, I mean). He looks like he's getting ready to kick some butt, and enjoy it--its fun and spunky. Good luck to you, too!

Haha, thanks! Genndy Tartakovski (creator of Samurai Jack) is one of my major influences, so I appreciate that!

this is one of my favourites of the finalists! No showy big weapons or magic! Just a simple, down to earth scout. Love it! Well done!

Thank you! I was trying to go with their description of a scout--a bow and a pair of daggers are the weapons they mentioned. I watched their little video, and just sketched out what seemed right

Wow... Like everyone says, love the simplicity of the design. But even more, underneath that apparent simplicity is evidence of a lot of effort, in the details of her shirt and belt and weaponry...
Congrats on being a semi-finalist!

Thank you for noticing I actually put alot of detail into this, but its easier to see when its unpainted. Once I painted it, it all kind of blended in...which I think may be a good thing; a real scout wouldn't want alot of flash, after all.

Of course! Your entry proves that details can come together to make something subtle and stunning. I'd also love to see a step-by-step progression of the picture now that you say that.
Still, character-wise this final appearance is probably for the best.
