Description Yes. This is how I did it.

I pretty much set out to follow the blueprints from the show, and build myself a model of it. I used what I knew from Photoshop & Illustrator, as well as what little 3D training I'd had before, and just plowed forward. I looked up online tutorials every now and again, but for the most part, this little sucker is built from scratch.

I think it's important when you're learning something new that you have a long-term, complicated and multi-layered goal. This one took the better part of a year to make. Keep in mind however, that I had to start from "this is how you make a sphere...this is how you modify the sphere."

Now I know Cinema 4D pretty darn well. Well enough to get by, anyway.

Made with Cinema 4D (if you hadn't figured that out by now, I think you may have trouble reading this anyway, so ), Adobe Illustrator, & Adobe Photoshop.

Thats a really awesome way to learn it, and I completely agree, its so much more fun to learn something when you have a goal that's motivating you to learn it, I learned digital art because I wanted to make daleks XD

I thought so. My only issue was, despite being a huge fan of the show, the work isn't exactly original. In fact, it's just the opposite of original.

So, to counterbalance it, I'm working on a completely different console room for a character from the classic series. Someone I'd like to see brought back (please, Moffat?). I think I'll leave it up for a couple weeks once it's done (it's about 60% done so far) so people can guess who the owner would be. Then I'll spoil it if nobody gets it. I left the preliminary design up on my FB page, but so far, nobody has a clue since everyone is still under the impression that Matt Smith was the 3rd Doctor.

Seriously, some of them were wondering who the old guy was that showed up at the end of the 50th.

Daleks can also be fun. In case you haven't seen the site, tardisbuilders.com has a lot of plans, schematics, reference images, etc...and I'm pretty sure they have plans for every version of the Daleks from their first appearance in 1963 to their most recent versions.

I personally have been thinking of doing a redesign on them. Something more reminiscent of the special weapons Dalek that appeared alongside the 7th Doctor.

I am always looking for collaborators, though. I tend to do much better work with a team, or at least someone with whom I can bounce ideas around!

Wow, thanks for sharing that site, I'm looking at it now and it looks really useful.

That seems like a really creative idea though, I'm excited to see what it is

Thanks, but I can't take all the credit.

Unlike my other work, this one actually followed a schematic. I just followed the plans, and kept looking up tutorials when I ran into a bit I didn't know how to do.

Mind you, I think it speaks volumes for the program being that easy to learn.

Thank you, but in all honesty I don't know if I can really qualify it as patience. I was also going to school for studio arts, and really only worked on this for a few hours a week. If I couldn't figure out how to do something, I just watched a couple youtube videos until I figured out the tools.

The thing with it being so repetitive is that I got to practice doing stuff over and over again, so I really got the hang of a few things.

I'm considering trying to make something more organic next time...maybe a person, just to see if I can get that sculpting thing figured out.

it looks like a real little plastic model

you didn't add shadows on purpose?

Oh, there ARE shadows...it's just that I also set the scene up using the schematics from the original show, including the lighting. The thing is, if you use soft light from enough directions, you end up eliminating a lot of shadows.

In fact, doing it that way makes the render take even longer.

oh, I see. then good work!

and yes, that's why they use three light sources in movies for good shadows...
