Description
i've been waiting for this moment so long i dunno what to say. maybe that it's a good reminder of how i fooled u all on april 1sti'm afraid i will be breaking my 'one photo per idea/shoot'-rule. i took so many photos and i honestly feel like there are several good ones, so you'll be seeing more of these. i am hoping that i later realize the weaker links and can narrow them down then... this for me one of my most important photos/shoots. if you have seen japan 86 or in my past life , they were results of this shoot, but the shoot only happened because of this idea. harakiri is a japanese tradition not much in use anymore(or who knows), but i'm not a history person so this is not supposed to be an accurate reflection of the reality, this is my idea, using cliches and symbols around us, and a woman as the subject of course. actually, harakiri means cutting the abdomen open, but so what, she's got her unique style (pun intended). every person is unique, and all that uniqueness disappears when they die. that's just one reflection on the title.
i got the idea for this photo in the night of july 2nd last year, in montreal, canada. i couldn't sleep for hours because i was so excited over it. it did not turn out to be my best photo ever, in fact the original image that i had in my mind didn't really work in real life at all and so i tried a lot of different poses and looks. i kept thinking about this photo and finally set up the shoot in november. my obstacles were finding a proper sword and a kimono. i couldn't wait longer since i knew ^hesitation was the perfect model and i was leaving canada at the end of november. so i got the props i needed and stressed like hell and tried my best. as i said, it's not my best but i'm pretty happy with it.
she's ^hesitation and i am so happy she's such a patient and motivated model.
the sword is ^superkev 's
the kimono is made by Lissa Hill
the fakeblood is artificial, please read more here [link]

This is like that Samurai code thing, damnit why cant i remember it. but like, part of the code was that if you dishonor yourself you have to kill yourself by sticking a sword through your stomach, and yeah. this is a gorgeous shot, its something like loss of innocence, because her kimono is so clean and white and pure until it's stained with blood. Great idea, beautiful shot.

awesome. the kimono is gorgeous! nice concept. I love it! looks very real. and the fact that it doesn't show all of her face gives the woman mystery, and I love those kind of photos, but thats only my taste.

I'm jealous that you have enough money to buy a dress to stain with blood.
Hopefully one day, I will be rich enough. Heh.

I think the blade should move horizontally, but this is only a small detail, what bugs me is the bright studio background.... who would commit suicide in a well-lit studio?
The picture would work better with black background. I really miss the medieval japanese feeling, I see something that is telling a story but I just can't believe what it's telling...

Perhaps you've heard more than a lot of this.. But I don't think that she would bleed that much. At least if the Katana is sharp, and usually they are goddamn sharp, not to mention durable(shot with 9mm pistol, bullet cut in half. Shot with 50. Cal. automatic, 7 bullets cut in half before the Katana finally gave in. There are a few actual videos circling around the internet about this.).
But what I'm trying to say, the blood.. It's unrealistic. There perhaps would be a little of it, near the edge of the sword, and most of it even then on the backside.
Though, then it wouldn't look like much. Not as good as this looks, so, despite the realism.. Nice work.
..Oh, wait did you say "sword" intentionally? It's not a Katana? Or was that just an honest mistake? It looks like a Katana to me though.. Though I'm no expert either.

yup, as u guessed it's not really supposed to be ultra-realistic (like, a non-asian girk wearing kimono and french manicure on nails...), it's suppused to tlook good.
i dunno if it's a sword or katana...well, everyone called it a katana i thinki. doesn't matter as long as it looks good

i think the lighting works well here. it seems to give her a soft feel, as do the soft blue color and the flowers on the kimono. that just makes it all the more tragic that she's killing herself. i agree with the lipstick looking like part of a geishas makeup. kind of a cruel joke. even in death she can't escape the habit of concealing her real face. i also like how only half of her face is showing. takes away her identity, her uniqueness. i imagine this as the moment right before she falls over. her hands are so relaxed on the hilt of the sword. i have to echo so many people when i say it's a shame that beautiful kimono had to be ruined. but this shot is really nice so i guess it was worth it. i have to say also, that my favorite from this shoot so far is "in my past life". so i'm glad you're breaking your "only one shot per shoot" rule. sorry that sounds funny. oh well.
