I don't think she's actually gender neutral just that she was unable to join the school as herself for reasons so she disguised herself as a boy to avoid being recognized.

I understand that. However, the way the producers and directors of the show handle that throughout the rest of the series will reflect a lot more than just the basic plot. I guess we'll see where it goes.
