Things I’m good at: neglecting my more well-written OCs until two years later when I’m more confident in my art skills. In other words, after two years I finally have a good reference picture of this guy. Punch me in the face.

So yeah. Avian Juniper, son of Marlinchen from the Juniper Tree. The Juniper Tree is the worst fairytale ever and I hate it so much that I had to make an OC from it. It’s about a son who’s killed by his stepmother, then his death is blamed on his younger sister. His sister, Marlinchen/Marlene/Marleen/Ann Marie/Margery/(ok how many variations are we going to get of her name) ends up baking him into a pie or stew and burying his bones underneath a Juniper Tree in their backyard. Thankfully, the boy does get his revenge but that’s up to you to find out how.

In general, he has no chill. Avian’s a very excitable, enthusiastic person who always tries to get an impression across that he’s always looking over at the bright side. He’s always trying to portray a diligent, clever image of himself so he often stresses over how he acts and looks.

He also has a cousin named Icarus who’s very important to him, and a best friend named Tenley who’s equally important. He’s also the willing third-wheel of his friend group because he’s waiting for Icarus and Tenley to get together.

Storybook Romance Status: I think romance is great but I also think pie is better.

Favourite Subject: Lunch! Definitely lunch. Okay, maybe Crownculus if lunch doesn't count, but lunch is definitely my favourite.

Least Favourite Subject: I don't really like Cooking Classics. I'm okay with cooking as much as the next guy, but I suck at practicals and it kinda reminds me of the worst part of my destiny...

Best Friends Forever After: Tenley Rosewood and my cousin, Icarus Juniper. I’ll probably trust them with my life.

Personality:

Avian is a very excitable and enthusiastic guy. He's really confident about stuff he likes, like birds, and is prone to long-winded passionate rambles and rants about the stuff.

He’s very much an absent-minded person, which is rather frustrating when paired with his natural diligence. That’s something he really finds annoying because Avian wants to be see as a responsible and trustworthy person, but his constant forgetfulness undermine his diligence.

Other than that, Avian is hospitable and friendly. He introduces himself to people by offering them baking, he’s usually seen with a smile, he probably randomly starts cleaning places just to get people to like him. He's very much a people person and basically wants people to like him as much as he likes people.

Opinion on Destiny:

As one of the most well-mannered and well-behaved Marlinchen over the last century, Avian knows that he’s suited for his destiny. He’s respectful, hospitable and basically everything you need to be a good Marlinchen. One problem: he is a guy.

One of the reasons why Avian’s so unsure about accepting his destiny is not because he thinks it’s embarrassing, but because he doesn’t want to be that guy who takes a destiny that’s respected but also written for a girl away from a girl. His mother had always raised him on feminist ideas so him taking opportunities away isn’t exactly something he’s comfortable with.

That’s something that clashes a lot with another opinion he has about his destiny – he’s going to be a good Marlinchen and one of the most accurate Marlinchens (personality-wise) in the century. Avian knows that his mother, his great-aunt, and all the other Marlinchens before him went through with their destinies despite not having the right personality, so he should, as well.

But soon, his cousin’s dad, his uncle is getting married. His uncle’s new wife has a daughter his age who seems to be a perfect future Marlinchen. Avian has always viewed himself as the next Marlinchen and not just Avian, but he’s not quite sure whether he’s willing to fight her for the Marlinchen role.

History/Family:

Avian’s mother, Marlene “Marlinchen” Juniper, was quite possibly the worst Marlinchen anyone could have seen. She was an outspoken rebel who refused to listen to society. She would wear outrageous clothes and swear a lot. She was the kind of person in high school who would have started a biker gang if they had motorbike licenses.

After high school, she went through her Marlinchen destiny bitterly, reluctantly and regretfully. Then she went to university and graduated top of her class with a business degree. Soon after she married the hot foreign student she met during uni and everything was great, they had a kid named Avian, and Marlene was pretty sure that her fairytale legacy days were over, that her brother would end up remarrying soon so her son wouldn’t have to end up being the next Marlinchen.

But, her brother Mac ended up being so attached to his first wife that he never remarried, and Marlene was essentially forced to have her son relive her life simply because she didn’t want to risk the Juniper Tree from disappearing from people’s memories.

Avian grew up as a pretty chill kid. But of course, knowing that you’re the next Marlinchen is always a burden, so from a chill kid he went to a teenager with no chill.

• He’s longsighted so he wears reading glasses! I don’t usually draw him with glasses because he doesn’t like wearing them when it’s not necessary and also comfort zone what’s that.

• He’s red-green colourblind, a heritary trait passed on from his mum’s side of the family.

• Likes arguing with his cousin Icarus about who really is the protagonist. Often for no reason at all.

• Avian has never actually read his story so he has no idea that he’s not the one who kills Icarus.
