Pretty much. The idea behind it was to focus on a character flaw that's presented in the show and then amplify that flaw, primarily for comedic effect. Obsessive love, harboring secret love, being in a one-sided relationship, unrequited feelings... I think that these are traits that many of us have gotten a taste of at one point in our lives, so it's both relatable to see, amusing to see it exaggerated, and sad to realize from a distance that there's something unhealthy going on.
