Description
Sokka's tribute to "The Boiling Rock"...he knows Mai's awesomeness.Actually, his art skills might have slacked off a bit...his picture might have been better than my Sokka-style pics...but Mai looks less mannish, so I suppose that's what matters.
There are probably a lot of questions you want to ask about this...Sokka has an explanation for everything, though.
What's funny is that these pictures are going to be historical references in the future. Documentations of what happened in the past. Everyone will know how Prince Zuko bawled his eyes out when faced with death at the Boiling Rock prison...
And I love milking the bit where Sokka gives that "hi" to Ty Lee in the drill for all it's worth....hehehe.
Okay.
MY picture.
If you're wondering "What HAPPENED to Sokka's HEAD," that was me trying to be bold with a complicated character. I referenced some of rufftoon's sketches...and it was a bit of a disaster. Zuko's face got messed up, too.
But I had the strangest thrill as I drew him. Or rather, his outfit...it's been SO LONG since I've drawn him in the teashop garb, but it's SO FAMILIAR...the colors, the stripes, everything. It's just...yeah. And it doesn't exactly boost the manliness of his defense.
Suki's outfit is fun to draw. Complicated. But fun. And her face didn't turn out THAT bad...I think. Mai was probably (for once) the best part of the picture.
Things I'm proud of:
1. Mai's hand holding the papers.
2. Sokka's HANDS.
3. Suki's outfit.
4. Mai kicking the guard's butt.
5. The sharks.
Things that need work:
1. Angles.
2. Shading. Goodness, I messed up.
3. Zuko's head.
4. Suki's hands.
All of this comes on the euphoria of Conan O'Brien referencing Avatar during a skit...
Pics are by me (and Sokka).
All belong to Mike and Bryan and Nickelodeon and Avatar: the Last Airbender.

Great job, love their outfits! I can just imagine them all bickering like this .. hehe

I recognized the bag as the Warden while contemplating whether or not Ty Lee was jumping from shark-to-shark with her crazy-acrobat skill, but I also noticed that Sokka appears to believe that Chit Sang was wearing an invisibility cloak the entire time...

Zuko's hair looks he was running at high speed through the room as he said his line...either that, or he whipped his head around really fast, and it resulted in one of those impossible anime hair flow things. I'm not criticizing, it's just hilarious.

Okay, okay...
Ty Lee being the "best" drawn in the first panel?
Azula flying away on batwings while Zuko cries and there are sharks that are mysteriously resistant to the hot water? (And WHAT, dare I ask, is next to Suki? XD)
Mai LITERALLY kicking a guard in the butt?
And then the final panel... "I KNOW WHAT I SAW!" And yes: basically Zuko's entire look isn't helping his case...
Just...great work, swan. The epicness of this piece cannot be placed in a single comment.

You basically...just doodle. No revisions, just scrawl a rough shape. They still didn't work out like Sokka's drawings, exactly, but...close enough. Heh.

Oh wow, this is made of win and magic I swear it! You and Sokka both have oodles to be proud of I'd say
Though I must querry as to why he did end up putting more detail and effort into Zuko's girlfriend and curvy ms. Midriff than his own girlfriend...that kinda thing sticks with a girl...and I'd imagine a girl that can hand you your own backend on a platter would be no different.
For the record there are not words to describe how much I love Sokka's expression in the last panel, or the way Sokka drew himself all heroic

It also probably drew some subtle influence from this: [link]
Scrubs tends to work its way into my pieces. Especially Turk and Carla...they make good models for older Kataang gags ( [link] ) and for Sokka and Suki things. JD also does a good job for Sokka.
Janitor and JD make for good Katara and Zuko ideas...
Cox and JD work for Zuko and Aang or Zuko and Sokka...
Turk and JD for Aang and Sokka.
Jordan, Elliot, and Carla for Mai, Katara, and Suki....I think they deleted the clip I was thinking of, but it was funny.

Sokka's attracted to Ty Lee. XD Suki'll straighten him out, but Sokka's a flirt. Luckily, Suki can keep him on his leash pretty well. There was also the way he got a kick out of teasing Suki over being beaten by Azula...XD It's Sokka. What would you expect?
Also, to him, that's a good Suki, I think. You know. Like his sand sculpture!

heartsyhawk In reply to swan-swan [2008-09-04 18:28:47 +0000 UTC]
Ok that's Ty Lee explained, but I'd say there's still cause for Suki AND Zuko to fidget with the detail given to Mai
Yes that is true, Sokka is a flirt by natural design, and I don't suppose we'd love him the same way if he wasn't. Fortunately Suki does seem able to keep him on the leash in the vicinity of the line one ought to toe. Even when he was ribbing her for teasing him and the rest of the gaang she was able to shut him up right quick.
I do suppose he'd think it the stuff of masterpiece given the track record of everything artistic (with the exception of the beaver/woodchuck/wooden carved statue of God knows what he had in Northern Air Temple) he's ever attempted

swan-swan In reply to heartsyhawk [2008-09-04 18:45:23 +0000 UTC]
WEll, I also originlly conceived the picture as being Sokka's way of saying "thank-you" to Mai...the initial concept was of him sort of flailing around (a la his spazzage after Aang vanquished Ozai), but there would be too much work involved for me to feel comfortable. My mind was set on a few panels or poses of Sokka...but one is hard enough.
Then I thought of him just replaying "The Boiling Rock," and, well...yeah. It was also originally just going to be a picture he gave Mai of her demolishing the soldiers, but THEN I thought that it would be hilarious if Zuko was crying...and then I decided that Suki should probably be there, too, and I wondered how she would take it if Sokka put more effort into Ty Lee than he did her. And thus...the idea was born. Mai shows her gratitude by dryly pointing out flaws, Zuko bristles defensively at his unmanly portrayal, and Suki becomes quizzical of him and his attentions. And Sokka stubbornly defends his artistic license.
Can you imagine what his engagement necklace is going to be like? XD

heartsyhawk In reply to swan-swan [2008-09-04 19:01:16 +0000 UTC]
Storebought hopefully for Suki's sake No, really, in my mind he tries and fails spectacularly and then Aang helps him out by weaving a pretty band from Golden and Green Silk thread (representing bravery and honor in true Kyoshi warrior tradition)and then 'GranPakku' (as the man will henceforth be known, I don't gibe a darn whether he likes it or not) sits him down and gives him an intensive carving class.
Yes...I've put far too much thought into that topic...

I liked the image of there being a miniature mountain of failed attempts in a darkened room...which looks something like Aladdin's prison cell, for some reason. No, wait, it's the room that Appa was "kept" in in Ba Sing Se...the one with Old Sweepy.
He finally got one to work...nice thoughts from you, though. XD You love your Sukka.

I like the idea of a heap of failed attempts hidden in some nice secluded place like a basement or his study...wherever he keeps the designs and prototypes for the stuff he designs since I don't see his mind going to disuse, no matter how grown up he gets
Yeah I do, really. It's always been my main Avatar Ship. Even when it seemed she was a one episode character
