Description
WARNING: HUGE FILE APPROACHING.The third and final chapter of this saga:
[link]

Do remember to comment if you read this whole thing. I'll try to make this short, but there's a lot I want to mention....
First off. I spent over twelve hours on this thing. Twelve hours. And that was doing what I consider a low-quality job...no real shading, simple background, and all that....but I paid attention to certain things. A lot of images used references, but some of the better ones were actually non-reffed.
Let's move on to the artist's commentary, panel-by-panel:
1. I reffed Mai for this one, as is probably obvious, and just made a few minor tweaks....but she impressed me here. Something about the way her ribbons are drooping, too....
2. *peek*. 'nuff said. I like the pacing of this panel.
3. It was so hard deciding what Mai was going to be "saying." In the end, I settled on that...still not entirely happy....oh, she's probably just terrified at this strange person who has popped in, because that sure isn't Zuko. I don't think so, anyway. Maybe the turtleduck attack was worse than I thought (I apologize for the obvious lack of injury).
4. Thank goodness Katara showed us her crush on Aang in "The Headband," because it made a fine reference. Zuko was all freehand. ^_^
5. I think ideal pacing would have been to have this one spread over two panels, but it worked out well enough. The wordless setup kept bugging me, though, because it clearly looked like he started making excuses in the NEXT panel....
6. Yep. Just "bear." I would have given him a Pinocchio nose, but that would be going a little far.
7. Again, I would have liked Zuko to ramble a little more, but I do like how Mai subtly passed the box from one hand to the other. And, again, her dialogue killed me there....her excuses and Zuko's ramblings are easy, but simple one-liners are killer.
8. Bwahahaha. This panel was actually almost last-minute. I originally wanted to have it just end with him sitting next to her and sharing the chocolates in a cute way, but I couldn't work it out...then I had the idea for a "reflecting back" ending (cheesy, but I think it worked), and the turtleduck slipped his way in there by default. And if you haven't worked out the clues yet, he's one diabolical mastermind of a shipping turtleduck. Mai and Zuko's legs gave me no end of difficulty in this panel, too, so that's why they're not there.
I'll leave the rest to the viewer to work out.
Come on, how can you resist a girl petting a turtleduck on her lap? Toph was a helpful reference for that, her and Momo....
I'll probably touch up a few panels and make them their own pictures. The first and the last are the major probable ones.
And the true irony here is, I had no intentions of doing a Valentine's Day pic. Then I did that first Mai one....which led to the inspiration of a sequel, and this. Actually, this one preceded the sequel--I wanted Zuko to just flop down next to Mai on a bench after Azula stole his candy, but then I decided to go with the comic idea, and then went to this. So, yeah. Story of my life over the past few days. On-and-off, except for today, which was a full five-hour streak. I have tears in my eyes because I've been staring at this screen for so long.
So, yeah, MS Paint for the win.
Oh, and unless there's something that's REALLY bugging you (which means that it's probably going to bug me, too), I'll be leaving this mostly as it is. It was rough sketches that worked their way out of my control. And I have more important pics to draw. Probably featuring Combustion Man.
Mai and Zuko belong to Viacom, Nickelodeon, Mike, and Bryan. And each other.
I can't speak for the turtleduck, though.
The pic is mine!
See what you can do with Maiko if you let your imagination work?
Comments would be very, very nice.

Yeah, the obsession yields its rewards at times.
Thank you for the compliment! ^_^ Turtleducks increase a picture's adorable factor exponentially.

BECAUSE IT *IS* CUTE!!!
People just need to explore it and make it so, instead of griping about it....[/freaking out]
I can continue ranting if you're interested.
Maiko's cute. It's two childhood sweethearts separated from one another by the evil father. She waited three years for him to return....was probably there when Ursa vanished....kid love.

[even though I still want Zuko to me-self ]
But hey, I know you're a Maiko fan [obviously] and everything, but you gotta admit that some of their conversations are BOORING!

swan-swan In reply to thefifthmarauder [2008-02-12 02:54:06 +0000 UTC]
Not really.
Their first one? Mai delivers the unexpected, and is pretty much the first person to shoot Zuko down in a non-malicious way. She played with him there. No one else really does that....well, June did. But she was more of just bullying him.
"The Headband"? Humor. A flat, bland couple says that the sky is a beautiful color. Mai goes for the opposite. A normal couple says "I love you." Mai and Zuko do "I don't hate you." Because they both hate the rest of the world. XD Because the rest of the world didn't give a blarneystone about Zuko's burning and banishment.
"The Beach" was all back-and-forth banter. With a little arguing, and some exposition.
"Nightmares and Daydreams" was a little bit of love-chit-chat, with Mai actually showing some happiness and actual girliness. And then we went into plot development.
Nothing boring unless you make it so....
It's fandom propaganda against Maiko, and against the creators, that makes it seem boring.

You know what...you might be right. It all depends on how you look at it, doesn't it? I've always looked at Maiko like: eugh. But if you think about it...MAYBE there might be some cuteness.
What I like most about it is that Zuko is happy around her. That always makes me happy too! XD And yeah, in Nightmares and Daydreams Mai was acting like a girly spoiled princess, wasn't she? LOl. And Zuko was giving her all she wanted. XD

swan-swan In reply to thefifthmarauder [2008-02-12 04:19:23 +0000 UTC]
You know, people keep saying that, but I can't see where Mai is acting "spoiled" at all in Nightmares and Daydreams. Zuko asks her what she wants, she names it, and he can get it for her and he says so in an instant.....then, later, she's suggesting how to make him happy. She just takes a shot at cheering him up and taking his mind off things. Probably the same sort of thing, she, Azula, and Ty Lee did back when Ursa left. Zuko got in with those three before, judging by the fact that he and Ty Lee were on pretty easy speaking terms on Ember Island....they probably worked to cheer him up and give him something to do before Iroh came home. I'm guessing that Mai was doing the same thing there--suggesting activities to do to take his mind off of what was bothering him. Which, unfortunately, wasn't what he needed then. Before, when Ursa left, that was exactly what the doctor ordered. But now...action's required.

Hmm..well she was acting kinda spoiled when she said "Order some servants around". I thought that was...well...bratty.
Gah, I dunno. I dont pay much attention to the Mai side of the story, as I was never a fan of her myself. But yeah.
So what do you think will happen to her now? Do you think shes gonna come after Zuko, or forget him?

swan-swan In reply to thefifthmarauder [2008-02-12 04:58:27 +0000 UTC]
Interpretation, interpretation. She was attempting to cheer Zuko up. And come on--when you're given servants, you're going to get excited and want to have fun ordering them around. Let the girl have some fun. She was doing it for Zuko, not herself. Bad girlfriend would have said "Okay, well, I'm off to order the servants around some more"....she was telling him to go order them around, because he'd been happy back then. That's the cheer-up thing. Servants probably enjoy their jobs just as much as the people ordering them. They're paid for it....they get to be busy....really, ordering servants around is probaby a service to them, too. Trust me, as a Wendy's employee, I can say that it's so much more fun to be doing work than standing around.
"Life is so unnerving for a servant who's not serving." That's what Lumiere said. So, remember....when she talks about that, that's not being mean. That's being playful. That's her saying, "Cheer up, emo-kid!"
Mai forget about Zuko? HA. He's just put her into the same nightmare situation she found herself in three years ago. That means that there's character development. Mai is going to explode. I hope. She is going to meet Zuko again, and she is going to give him the chewing-out of his life. And then kiss him. And then, there WILL be back-to-back fighting.
Hopefully.

XD You know what, sure. And I guess...the whole ordering servants around...sure...and iget what you mean about that would've cheered him up a while ago.
So Mk. And yeah, I think Mai will follow him too. I hope so. That'd be fun to watch.

It's the same thing now, only a little more grown-up. Still two lovebirds. Zuko had nothing to do for a while in the plot...so, they set him up with Mai. Consider: if Mai's going to be an important part of the plotline in the future, if she's going to be Zuko's companion, they had to set her up. Shipping was in the show from the start. So, why spend all of Zuko's time with Mai, except when he's actually working in a plotline?
When you think about it, nothing really happened in Nightmares and Daydreams for Zuko. He came to his conclusion, but....if you cut that episode and just watched 306, you'd be at about the same point. I think the point of Zuko's plotline in that episode was to show us his realization, but also to share some time with Mai--establish her as an equal to him, in a way. Give us a good reason. About a third of Zuko's time before the Day of Black Sun was spent with Mai....they're setting her up for something.

You just don't like it?
I've got more work to do then, I guess. I can't change your mind, or the fandom's, but I'm going to break the wall of hate and get some life into this ship befoe it makes its ultimate move.
I'm not asking for support or liking. Yet. I'm asking for acceptance, so that when Maiko returns in full, there's an enthusiasm and understanding. The thing that Maiko is lacking is fandom support and promotion.
Why did no one have an issue with Azula being friendly this season, or call it out-of-character? Because of fandom promotion. Especially from rufftoon's comics. Incredibly popular, giving Azula a comical and lighter side. Fandom promotions. All that jazz.
But Mai didn't have enough smiley pics, enough happy pics, enough "this is why it's canon" pics. And even in the two months after the trailer's release, there just wasn't enough action and promotion, and too much opposition from the Zutarian side. Dream excuses, conspiracy theories, and general belittlement. Dozens of Zutarian pictures that I have come across end up being out-of-character for them, however, in-character, and even dramatically beautiful, if it was Maiko. Fans have the power to shape the fandom. I've come to the true realization of what that means recently, and that's why I'm hammering out Maiko pics and journals. Because the fact is that we just haven't had the support. I, myself, was nervous about giving the fandom the wrong idea. So I held off until I was certain of what we weree dealing with....and then, when I became fully confident in Maiko for the first time, we had the UK disaster. Which resulted in me isolating myself from the fandom, submission-wise, as I didn't want a comment saying something like, "Oh, yeah, Mai dies in 308" or something like that. Then, things became even more complicated when Zuko left, and then we had the Western Air Temple and The Firebending Masters. And I have theories about what is going to happen, but I also know that I don't want to spoil anything directly. All I kow is that I want the way opened for Maiko.
I'm not bashing Zutara anymore, as best I can. I want fandom alliances. The fact is, Mai was neglected. Everyone took her as one-dimensional, and no one bothered to explore her more. The Zutarian faction is supposed to explore everything in the show, they see things where they aren't obvious and read between the lines. And yet....they ignored Mai. A girl with hints at a deeper past, a girl with previous Zuko involvement, a girl who lets us know nothing about her, not even what she feels, and leaves everything open to interpretation....as I've said before, practically a gift to the fandom. Aaaaand, nothing.
If most of the Zutara stuff is/was out of character, why can't they put Mai out of character if they don't like her? Why just give up on her? The answer is obvious. It's a general dislike of Mai because she's a threat to the Zutara ship. I find it hilariously unamusing that most Zutara shippers are SasuSaku and Naru/Hina shippers, when those two bear incredible similarities to the second-season image of Maiko. But...nope. Not even willing to give Maiko a chance. Not that Maiko did the best job of selling itself to what they had idealized--someone to kiss Zuko's booboos and have active chemistry with--but it gave something completely different. And it's not over yet.
I can respect fanon Zutara, and the shippers. But there needs to be a willingness to accept Maiko and Kataang. Until we hit that point....I'm going to continue as I am. Granted, this reply went a lot longer than I meant....but this particular rant has been a long time coming...you just had the bad luck of being on the receiving end.... It's not you, it's the fandom in general. If someone has a problem with Mai, the easiest thing to do is to immerse oneself in alternate moods and situations for her. Okay, I think I'm done.....

Azula did seem out of character but it was funny! And I have never ever hated Mai. In fact, she is one of my favorite characters! I just don't ship her with Zuko.
And I don't like Naruto, so I'm not one of those Zutarians who you talked about. Even if I did like Naruto, none of the girl characters seemed strong enought to me. Sakura bugs the heck out of me!! ( [link] )
I try to respect other shippings, but I really really do LOVE Zutara and that's not going to change.
