Description
WARNING: HUGE FILE APPROACHING.The third and final chapter of this saga:

Do remember to comment if you read this whole thing. I'll try to make this short, but there's a lot I want to mention....
First off. I spent over twelve hours on this thing. Twelve hours. And that was doing what I consider a low-quality job...no real shading, simple background, and all that....but I paid attention to certain things. A lot of images used references, but some of the better ones were actually non-reffed.
Let's move on to the artist's commentary, panel-by-panel:
1. I reffed Mai for this one, as is probably obvious, and just made a few minor tweaks....but she impressed me here. Something about the way her ribbons are drooping, too....
2. *peek*. 'nuff said. I like the pacing of this panel.
3. It was so hard deciding what Mai was going to be "saying." In the end, I settled on that...still not entirely happy....oh, she's probably just terrified at this strange person who has popped in, because that sure isn't Zuko. I don't think so, anyway. Maybe the turtleduck attack was worse than I thought (I apologize for the obvious lack of injury).
4. Thank goodness Katara showed us her crush on Aang in "The Headband," because it made a fine reference. Zuko was all freehand. ^_^
5. I think ideal pacing would have been to have this one spread over two panels, but it worked out well enough. The wordless setup kept bugging me, though, because it clearly looked like he started making excuses in the NEXT panel....
6. Yep. Just "bear." I would have given him a Pinocchio nose, but that would be going a little far.
7. Again, I would have liked Zuko to ramble a little more, but I do like how Mai subtly passed the box from one hand to the other. And, again, her dialogue killed me there....her excuses and Zuko's ramblings are easy, but simple one-liners are killer.
8. Bwahahaha. This panel was actually almost last-minute. I originally wanted to have it just end with him sitting next to her and sharing the chocolates in a cute way, but I couldn't work it out...then I had the idea for a "reflecting back" ending (cheesy, but I think it worked), and the turtleduck slipped his way in there by default. And if you haven't worked out the clues yet, he's one diabolical mastermind of a shipping turtleduck. Mai and Zuko's legs gave me no end of difficulty in this panel, too, so that's why they're not there.
I'll leave the rest to the viewer to work out.
Come on, how can you resist a girl petting a turtleduck on her lap? Toph was a helpful reference for that, her and Momo....
I'll probably touch up a few panels and make them their own pictures. The first and the last are the major probable ones.
And the true irony here is, I had no intentions of doing a Valentine's Day pic. Then I did that first Mai one....which led to the inspiration of a sequel, and this. Actually, this one preceded the sequel--I wanted Zuko to just flop down next to Mai on a bench after Azula stole his candy, but then I decided to go with the comic idea, and then went to this. So, yeah. Story of my life over the past few days. On-and-off, except for today, which was a full five-hour streak. I have tears in my eyes because I've been staring at this screen for so long.
So, yeah, MS Paint for the win.
Oh, and unless there's something that's REALLY bugging you (which means that it's probably going to bug me, too), I'll be leaving this mostly as it is. It was rough sketches that worked their way out of my control. And I have more important pics to draw. Probably featuring Combustion Man.
Mai and Zuko belong to Viacom, Nickelodeon, Mike, and Bryan. And each other.
I can't speak for the turtleduck, though.
The pic is mine!
See what you can do with Maiko if you let your imagination work?
Comments would be very, very nice.

Thanks a lot!
Every expression was different....let that be a lesson to people. If you want Mai to have different expressions, draw them yourself.

Cute. Only thing is, even when she feels discomposed, I can't imagine Mai rattling on nervously as she does in the third panel. That is very characteristic of Zuko, and even Aang, but not Mai. She shows her feelings in other ways. But it's cute.

Heh, well when attempting to cover up for why you're eating the chocolates you'd intended to give to the person who just jumped out from around the back of a tree (probably while you were thinking about them), you'd be a little incoherent, too...she recovered fairly quickly, too. And she's still young. Ish.
Besides, I only had one panel to work with.

True. It definitely works, and isn't incorrect, but I stand by my personal opinion that her reaction would've been in that same spirit, but different.
Oh, panels. I tried to do a verrrrry simple comic once. I failed miserably. Therefore, I can say nothing!

Yeah...I'm still not fully happy with the pacing and setup of this one. XD But it's enough.

Indeed. Valentine's deserves something, and it's nice that the timing on these worked out. I haven't done anything to mark the week....Well, I had my 3-year-old Sunday School kids make a Valentine for my Grandma, who's in rehab from a bad fall, does that count? And...I dressed up nicer than usual for Church?
I should do some Valentine's Day art. -_-

Mmmm...I guess it counts.
Like I said, I really don't do the whole Valentine's Day thing. It's my brother's birthday on Thursday, and that's more important....
You could make HIM something....

Since we don't have any birthdays that day, I always liked to do something fun with my friends for Valentine's Day. Last year we had a party where we played Apples to Apples and Taboo, and ate heart-shaped pizzas. ^_^ It was fun!
Mmm, may as well wish 'im a happy birthday with some art, if'n I'm gonna do something anyway! I should probably get crackin' on that for Thurs, and something for my 5000 kiriban, and finishing chapter 5. I'm going to...ignore my sociology reading...*sigh* no, I'll go do that right now. Blah.

You might want to do soc first.
You know, everyone verbally abbreviates "sociology," but how do you SPELL it?

WishIWould In reply to swan-swan [2008-02-13 03:00:17 +0000 UTC]
I have no idea.
Meanwhile, I finished the sociology reading for Thursday, hoorah! All I have to do is read the one for today and next Tuesday by next Tuesday, and I'm good. Boo-yah.
It drives my crazy; I generally read incredibly fast, but with textbooks, it's like my "word per minute" rate decreases by at least 2/3. It took this whole hour to read 25 pages. That's lousy. I mean, I read the entire "Deathly Hallows" in seven hours. It should NOT take me an hour to read 25 pages. *continued silly harrumphing*
Now, to the fun things! Except when I remember I have an Arabic quiz and need to study for that first! But, still enthusiastic (how long can it take to memorize the noun forms of about 20 verbs, anyway?)!

I'm still waiting for you to read my latest journal. Heh.....

WishIWould In reply to swan-swan [2008-02-13 05:15:34 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I read it. But I didn't want to leave a generic "ugh, that totally sucks, how frustrating!" because I thought that'd just remind you how sucky it was. And, as I couldn't think of anything remarkable, clever, or cute to say, I just didn't comment.
But as long as you brought it up: MAN, that SUCKS. ESPECIALLY since you made the most responsible decision at the time, despite loving Jane Eyre and wanting to read more! And you obviously have been very involved in this book, so you're probably one of the few people who it WOULD really matter to, to have such a huge thing spoiled. That's just one of those "Why?!? There was NOTHING I could learn from this experience!" twist-of-nature deals.
(meanwhile...2 hours later, still haven't memorized my maSdars...I'm awful)

swan-swan In reply to WishIWould [2008-02-13 05:19:13 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that was pretty much the case.
I probably should have edited and added that, in reality, it wasn't that big a deal. It was only a few pages later, and really...it was brief. It was what came AFTERWARDS that was the shocker, and that was the part that I didn't have spoiled. And I tuned out.
But, yeah. Aang's "WHAAAAA?" face was almost me....

Haha...which "WHAAAAA?" face? He has so many that jump to my mind right now!
Glad the "real spoilers" didn't getcha.
...I just had a sudden, distinct mental image of little monsters chasing you around, and li'l "Agent Swan-Swan" ducking around corners (and wearing a trench coat) in order to evade them. LOL.

Haha...fun to see them side by side! Photographic evidence cannot be denied.
(yadhuhab becomes al-dhuhaab, yaHufuth becomes al-Hufuth...maybe typing them out will help me focus...?)
Meanwhile, it seems like life is eating people today. Seriously, li'l ten-year-old Jane's head got pierced with a book, my friend is dealing with a lot of unfair drama that's costing her her job, a bunch of sugar is on fire and won't stop burning...I feel almost bad that I had a good day!

How refreshingly optimistic! I'm afraid that I must disagree with you; I recently discovered the secret to being consistently happy, save when extremely severe misfortunes should occur.
So I'ma gonna go ahead and be happeh for a whilez.

I love the ending. (And oddly, right after I watched Hook in a fit of nostalgia I've been having for over a week.)

Dante Bosco played the character Rufio. One time I turned it on, he spoke and I was all like "OMGWTFBBQ! ZUKO!" So finishing Hook and then seeing a Mai/Zuko fanart in my alerts means I had absolutely no problem with Zuko's voice this time around.

I, in a fit of true fangirl passion, bought Hook purley for the Zuko voiced goodness...that and it was only £3 and I loved it as a child, but still...omgwtfbbq's were had by me too

The thing is, said tale occured on my first watching of Hook. I had read a novelization, which I remember glossing over some scenes and adding quite a few back in seventh grade. (Holy crap! I thought I blocked seventh grade from my memory.) I tuned in on the television right when he made his appearance too.
