Description It's not often that I do a deviation that pretty much just redraws a screencap, but this one had to be done. I don't just upload screencaps--not my style.

YES, this is directly reffed. Notice anything interesting about the shape of the water? Thanks to brilliantlygreen for pointing that out, though she was shown it by someone else....but if you watch the scene, the water makes a shape that looks suspiciously like that universal love symbol.

I believe that this is the THIRD time that Aang and Katara have both been enclosed inside a heart, though there may be more.

My art is nowhere near as good as the show's, though, so I realize that I did it nowhere near justice. In the actual image, Aang and Katara are in a rather spectacular shape themselves--it looks like Aang is supporting Katara on his back.

[link]

A lot of errors in my picture, but if you go to the frame and look at it...well....it's a work of art in itself. There's a symmetry to the two, opposite but identical. Enclosed inside a heart shape....everything weights itself there.

It's also interesting to contrast the length and depth of this scene to the shorter and more superfluous scene between Mai and Zuko--the two ships are a Yinyang in themselves.

And I'll mention as I did in my journal that in this scene, Aang practically tells Katara that her love brought him back from the dead. I read the theme in an essay shortly before watching the premiere (the essay had been written a long time ago), and someone pointed that out, and when Aang mentioned that in the episode....the two of them have an epic and unbreakable bond. The dialogue of the scene is also non-Oedipal--the way that Aang talks to Katara....and the way that she talks to him....if you tried having a mom and a son talking like that, or even a sister and a brother, things would be very unusual.

I spent a bit more time on the background than the other pic--yin and yang! One pic has no work, the other one has some. It's still pretty rough and not cleaned up well, but it's all mainly about the heart-shape and the idea. It's the imagery that's important here, but still the description that I'm more focused on.

Katara and Aang belong to Mike and Bryan, but also kind of each other. Viacom and Nickelodeon own the whole shebang, though.
The pic is kinda mine--it's heavily reffed from a screencap, so it's not really my own image. I just drew it and colored.
The find is brill's friend's. EDIT: Who is Good find!!!

great job : D this was one of my favorite scenes, and this heart TOTALLY beats the so called zutara heart in crossroads made out of the fire and water whips. XD
good job with the coloring, especially the water!

Oh, I buy the Zutara heart in CoD....but I'm not sure if it was accidental, a nod to the fans, foreshadowing, or symbolism (hearts come but break in combat). It's a fun bit...but this moment seems a bit more valid.

Thanks!

Did you see Srac's Opposites Attract? [link] XD

Not to be the devil's advocate here, but the same 'heart-shaped' water and also fire thing was pointed out in the battle between Katara and Zuko We tend to read symbols where we want them, it's like seeing faces in random patterns. I'm a little suspicious of these symbols after reading The DaVinci Code

Yes, I have seen that, and it was a constant thorn in my side....I'm not saying that it's gone, but this can be considered a negation of the argument. Neither one can truly claim a prize, because both sides acknowledge that there's a symbol.

Though, for a harsh counter, we see the two hearts briefly, and then they rip apart and attack one another. Perhaps it's a symbol by the creators that what love they might have had is broken now.

In an almost unrelated note, it now annoys me when people say that Zuko was using the water whips because he'd seen Katara using them. He'd imitated her technique. That's a poor assumption--because he's never seen her use water whips like that before he pulls them out. It's HIS technique! HIS!!! And I'm sure he feels the same way...XD

Zuko learned water bending-like moves from Iroh, in that episode where he wanted to learn about creating ligthning. Zuko might not be as naturally gifted as Azula, but he catches on quickly

Yes, but he NEVER saw Katara using her water whips before he pulled the fire whips out against Aang.

She didn't use it at the North Pole....she did use the move that he uses against Azula, and that one is obviously one that would stick in his memory. The next time he meets her, she just offers to help; no bending. Except the attack that she launches against Azula, but if Zuko was paying attention to her during THAT, he's a bit too obsessed with her. The next time they met, she never fought, and then, she never uses the whip before he pulls out the flames.

It's all his creation.

I also wonder if any Zutarians think Zuko is sending an assassin after Aang to remove the competition....

I think that Zuko realized his fireballs would be deflected too easily by Katara's whips, and so he decided to fight with smilar weapons. So yes, the fire whips are his creation.

As for Zutara, little chance of that happening after the stunt he pulled that nearly got Aang killed. We Zutarians can still dream though

Well, he first went after Aang with them, though! He was ripping the place apart; Katara copied HIM!!! Except that she'd already been using a different style.

Yeah, you can dream...there's a chance, still...she knows that he has a good side...there'll be some interaction, even if it's not romantic.

I'll watch that episode again, I'm not sure of the way events unfolded

And there will be interaction between Katara and Zuko eventually, though I fear it'll make sparks fly

Well, I'm not sure if they'll fight one another...Katara will probably be the first one to accept him, or will probably be a link. We'll see....

Remember how Katara reacted when she met Jet in Ba sing Se? Unless Zuko is expected she might strike first and ask questions later.

Wow! I looked at the scene that day, and went "That's touching." But I never noticed the heart!
The other time was in Appa's saddle, when they kneel facing each other, talking.
The third time was through some wreckage or a cave entrance, right?
