You know, for being Mai's biggest fan, I sure do bully her a lot.The funniest part about this is that I didn't even think of Zuko's conversation with the badgertoad until AFTER I had conceived this comic. It was actually mainly based on a gag from Bleach--in fact, this may be plagiarized. XD Pretty much all of the Mai pictures...okay, ALL of the Mai pictures were referenced from Bleach. Gotta LOVE Soi Fong. She has Mai's bangs, two things that hang down, an angular face, and she's often seen wearing a tunic. Heh.
So, yeah, I promised myself that I wouldn't do any Valentine's Day pics, but...you have no idea how much I failed. I failed just as much as Mai's nerve.
Helpful tip: NEVER refine a comic unless you're insane. This took so long and took so much effort....
I think she turned out looking pretty good, though. Very cute. Ignore her hands in the third panel. And yes, I did just copy the turtleduck for the last panel....
Mai belongs to Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender. So does the turtleduck.
The pic is mine. But the gag is pretty much stolen from "Bleach."
Poor Mai. But she'll get to Zuko eventually.
I would like to add that I'm actually impressed with how Mai's face came out in the fourth panel....

She IS a lot like her old self now. She's happy, she's smiling, she's still a little shy, supportive of Zuko, she's really very similar. Just....more mature. More beaten-down by the world. Considering the fact that the love of her life had half his face burned off and was gone for three years, she's actually doing pretty well. She doesn't even mind the injury, which says a lot for her character. It's understated, it's subtle, but it's another one of those things that makes her different.

Heehee, I've seen until the episode of it is the runaway, then I got directly to the episode when Zuko joins the groupe (not intentionally... a friend told me the last episode was out and I watched it without seeing the puppetmaster, nor nightmare and daydreams, and not even the 2 pisodes of the day of the black sun... -_-'

What's bad about the dialogue?
I didn't like it much at first, either, but at one point, something in the dialogue breaks and you LOVE it. I think it was the point where you realize that Zuko is just a total dork and Mai appreciates that. Mai says a line that's really not that funny....and Zuko gives a dorky giggle and says that she's so beautiful when she hates the world. Phail, Zuko. Phail. But not with Mai. Mai loves him anyway.....

Mai's got a lot of expressions, even in the show. But it's the fact that people don't try giving her more expressions that keeps love for her from spreading.

I don't understand why some people hate her so much. If it's because of shipping reasons alone, then that's kind of stupid.

The only other real reason I've seen is "because she reminds me of this girl I don't like...." or something like that, which I understood before, but then I thought about it, and now it's a bottled rant/accusation thing. Because that's a bad reflection of who you are as a person if you judge somebody because they remind you of someone you don't like. Bigotry is bad.
Not weird at all. I know a few people who are like that...they love canon Maiko, but they're fanon Zutarians.

So, I don't know what exactly is different, but I can see a lot of improvement in your art in this piece! Something about it. It may be that the eyes and face successfully imitated hers, and with good expression. Also, that everything physically appears balanced - not like "draw a line and the two halves reflect," but like, proportionate and in the right place and every line looks confidently placed. By saying you've "improved," I am not implying you are or were ever bad. You know, every artist strives to improve, and I can just see that a lot in this strip. Well done!
