I'm really proud of this piece. It was a request from The-WonderSlug (art by me)
I wanted to draw the mermaid princess Shirahoshi from the anime One Piece. Therefore I used references directly from the anime or from google.
In the .gif ( Making of) I have uploaded you can see, that I only had the idea with the crew after i finished drawing Shirahoshi.
I changed my artstyle again. I hope you'll like it >.<

I love your vision for this, I believe the color scheme fits well with the underwater theme to this. The sharks and corral all add to the underwater feel. I think a few bubbles rather than clouds might have helped this out if you were going for an underwater look, but the clouds fit if she is above water!
There is a lot of originality in this, even being fanart. All of the little fish floating in the background were cute and a lovely addition to the reference you used. I also love the fact you took the people and made them the crew!
In terms of technique, I believe there is a bit to work on. The textures are done well where they are placed, but some spots seem a little too smooth, like her hair. The flow of her hair is good, but I feel it could use a few sharper details. Another thing that really leaves this piece lacking interest is the lighting and contrast. While you chose to go with natural lighting, which is ok, I believe that you could have taken advantage of the fact she is a mermaid and used a more interesting light set up. I also believe a little more contrast on her skin and the green embankments. The clouds could also use a little more contrast, and I feel the sky as a whole is flat.
The impact for me is not really there at all, and I missed what was supposed to be conveyed in her face until I looked at the reference you used. The fact she is staring straight ahead rather than looking down takes something away from this piece. The crew is a nice touch and helps out, but I think a little backstory is needed to understand why she looks concerned as well. I don't take any feeling or understanding away from this piece.

Β I know what you mean with the bubbles. I was thinking about it, but in the reference picture there were clouds. It's an anime and so there are under water clouds too :'D
Ah yes the lighning.. I#m currently working on it if you are looking at my older picture. I will try to do it better next time

i like the way you draw this.Β since this is a semi-realistic style you could try to make the hair more fluffier and realistic, it still looks a bit "blocky" like in manga.
the background looks good too, but you should play around more with the light. how light falls, where does it come from? what needs to be darker or lighter?
also things that are far away get a bit blurry and lighter.Β on your picture everything has the same brightness even the fishes in the background.
and you can make the clouds more visible, strong clouds can looks every nice X3

Yeah it's hard, do you have a little table lamp? you could test around how shadows change compared where you light it up.
you could buy the book of hikaru-hayashi that focus on textures, it has tips for lightings too. or google for examples
