Description So glad 2011 is over. Happy year of the Water Dragon, everyone!

Inked drawing in my sketchbook, coloured mostly with sharpies because the sketch was done with ballpoint pen and as much as I treasure my copics they make ballpoint ink run. :[

Thanks hun! I basically made this up as I went along so I'm glad that it actually came out halfway decent xD Trying to get braver with using brighter marker colours!

Oh. Well. If that's how you feel... *dramatic huff*

I kid. I hope you enjoy the new year, even if I am a Rabbit.

[It's already off to a good start for me. Maybe that's down to my having Water Rat as my hour sign?]

Haha! It's cool. The Tiger year before that (which is my birth year) wasn't fantastic for me either I'm glad you're having a good year so far! I don't know in too much detail how the different signs interact, though - but Fire Dragon is my hour sign so I'm hoping that means something good. >_>

the-striped-fox In reply to swift-whippet [2012-02-01 20:50:04 +0000 UTC]

I'm guessing Fire Tiger right? [I'm a Wood Rabbit.]

'Cause I think Fire mitigates Wood years somewhat, as Fire burns Wood. So the old maxim of "it could've been worse" could be used for the last two years.

Let's hope the Water Dragon produces some metaphorical steam to boost creativity with?

[Did you use both thick and thin Sharpie here? I only have the thin ones, and I really want the thick ones. Also, are they easy to use?]

Yes indeed, '86 was my year. The last two years were Metal, though, and were supposed to clash from what I understand. I usually don't pay that much attention to predictions (I'd go out of my mind if I did), but it's interesting to look back and compare what was predicted to what actually happened! And it already feels like it's going to be a good year or at least better, so I'm optimistic.

These Sharpies are 'fine point', and came in a set from Staples called '80's Glam' (couldn't pass up on a name like that, haha). They're interesting; as I said to a friend above I love Copic markers because of the subtle blending and shades you can get with them, and Sharpies are basically the complete opposite of that so it was fun figuring out new ways to use them. How do you define 'easy'? I'm definitely less afraid of using markers than I used to be!

FFFF yer right I got things mixed up. Years ending in 4 and 5 are Wood. I should know this. Silly me.

Ha I've seen that set before. I keep wanting to buy them but the price deters me [fixed income for the suck]. I really wish I could get Copics but there's just no way I could afford them, and I'd be too afraid to use them out of fear of running them out.

I suppose easy is whether they bleed through the paper or if they fade or something like that. Or if they ruin easily if you use lighter colours after using darks [yellow is the worst for that and is the reason I colour photocopies and not the originals].

swift-whippet In reply to the-striped-fox [2012-02-05 20:09:27 +0000 UTC]

:\ Sorry to hear. And yeah copics are pretty much something that I treat myself to once in a while. Supposedly there's a way to make your markers last by refilling them with regular rubbing alcohol when they run out, but I haven't tried this myself yet and can't speak for how well it works!

I haven't yet found a type of marker that doesn't bleed through the paper at all. As far as fading, as long as you keep them from sitting in the sun all day or something the colours keep pretty well. And well - the yellow eyes here were some of the last things I filled in, so judge for yourself! I'll probably do more marker experiments in future, I haven't used my Sharpies for art all that much.

Haha, take that, rabbit.
I like the colors you chose for it--so vibrant and watery. Lovely work with the blood and getting some contrast in there. Very neat stylization, too :>

swift-whippet In reply to UnfortunateCorvid [2012-02-01 19:50:48 +0000 UTC]

Yep, pretty much.
Thanks much, I'm glad you think they look watery!! I was basically making the colours up as I went and hoping they worked well because of the nature of markers, so I'm glad you like it First time I've been this brave with Sharpies!

UnfortunateCorvid In reply to swift-whippet [2012-02-01 20:09:54 +0000 UTC]

Haha. The blues and greens really give a "under the water with some plants" feel. The red and yellow eyes are a nice contrast, too.
Oh, wow, you colored it with sharpies? That's pretty neat :0 I figured they were with some kind of other type of marker.

Chinese dragons are supposed to have the 'eyes of a demon', so I always try to make mine huge and glowing and fierce. >D And I'll consider maybe making her into a side character in my dragon story. Hope to do something with that but all my ideas always get out of control and become huge x_x;

Yeah, I got a giant set of Sharpies in all different colours from Staples a while back and have been itching to try them! They're bolder than my Copics, which I love because of the variety of tones and the subtle blending you can get with them, so it was interesting and fun to work with a marker that's basically the complete opposite of that!

UnfortunateCorvid In reply to swift-whippet [2012-02-01 20:59:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh, really? That's pretty interesting :0
Haha, that would be neat. I know how that feels; and I have soo many ideas, it's hard to do anything with them all.

Oooh, that's coolio; I've been wanting to work with markers, but I haven't gotten any good enough to work with. Really nice to challenge yourself and work with multiple mediums :>
I should try to do the same, ff

You should try!! I got my set from Staples, I get 90% of my art supplies from Staples these days because it's decently priced - plus, ballpoint pens are my weapon of choice when it comes to sketching, and you can get a load of them for cheap - and they have all this cool paper to work with too! I do like schmancy art stuff as well but I can't spend that much money on it and not feel somewhat awful x_x; So yes I definitely recommend poking around Staples for things to art with haha.

UnfortunateCorvid In reply to swift-whippet [2012-02-01 21:16:20 +0000 UTC]

I think there's a cheap art store around here somewhere, but no Staples (there's an Office Depot, though).
Oh? You sketch with pens? That's pretty neat. I used to do that, but my work's too sketchy to be able to do something clean with them.
I mostly need to just get some art supplies for classes, so I might just have enough to grab some nice markers and paper next time I get to go to OD or the art store.

What I love about ballpoint pens though is that for me they're like sketching with a regular 2B pencil but without smudging or having to sharpen. You can get a great variety of tones because they're very pressure sensitive, so I usually just start really really light and then tighten up as I start to define stuff more. Like sculpting or something, really

Maybe I'll try to work some more in pen and buy a nice-sized case of 'em for it.

It's great because my favourites are the ones that you can pretty much literally find everywhere: [link] I find the best ballpoint pens for drawing are the ones that you get as free gifts for various events, or in hotel rooms. xD Definitely a good sketching tool, I recommend

UnfortunateCorvid In reply to swift-whippet [2012-02-02 03:35:45 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yeah?
Pff, pretty nice that the cheapest ones can get the job done just as well as some expensive pen.
I'll definitely keep ballpoint pens in mind next time I go shopping, thanks!

Fran actually said something along the lines of "it already feels like it's going to be better" and I'm inclined to agree! I don't know what it is but since December-ish I've just had a more positive vibe about everything.

Thanks, glad you like since this was a bit of a rough experiment! Also reeeally just wanted to flip an extra-large bird to 2011 now that it's basically over on both the lunar and solar calendars. >D I'm definitely more comfortable with markers than I used to be and I just got a giant set of different-coloured Sharpies that I wanted to try out. And apparently I like sketching in ballpoint more than pencil now!
