Description
Hidden Falls near Auburn California. The picture looks serene but it is by far the most dangerous and athletic picture I've ever taken. I stuck to the side of a cliff like Spiderman on a narrow ledge. Only two legs of the tripod would go on said ledge so I had to use my belt to tie the tripod off to myself so my camera wouldn't fall into the void.
In order to frame the shot I had to lean out hanging on to a (sturdy) tree root to get my eye to the eyepiece, all the while in a taxing half crouch.
Everything was made worse when I couldn't get the sunlit area to not overexpose so I had to use a graduated ND filter. I don't have any way to affix the filter to front of my lens; I usually just hold it there. The hand I usually use to do that had to hang on to the tree root so that was out. I was about to give up when I remembered that my camera has a timer. So I set it to a ten second delay, dangled out over the abyss to compose my shot, and used my right hand to hold the filter instead of actuate the shutter.
The result isn't earth shattering by any means, but this photo will always have a special place in my heart.

Wow, you make African sarari trips to photograph stampeding elephants (coming towards you!) sound really tame. I'm relieved that you came away unscathed and got to share the calmest adventure shot of a lifetime!

I'm glad you liked it. I think a safari would likely end up being fatal in my case, but I'd get a sweet macro of a rhino eye before being gored.

LOL I fear you are right.
I read your ID description and saw bomb disposal technician and thought 'yeah right' but as I read this photo description and saw/read more in your I realised you are telling the truth. And I apologise for my lack of faith

You're right to be circumspect, lots of people claim it with current global conflicts and the corresponding Hollywood attention.

And the t.shirt that you're bound to have seen (if not own) 'I'm a bomb disposal technician, if you see me running, try to keep up'.
I get nervous about catching public transport somewhere new to me. Guess I'm not cut out for the dangerous life. Giving horsey rides on my back to my grandchildren is far more my scene ROFL

Well if it helps, I also get nervous catching public transport somewhere new.

Oh wow - that I did *not* expect!
My husband and youngest son are both public transit bus drivers. You'll be happy to know I'm at peace when they're the driver My eldest son is a systems administrator but is about to abseil off a tall building in the city for charity later this month. No consideration for his mother at all LOL

Now I'm not so sure that photography is less blowy-uppy.

Yeah. I suppose that's really more of a personality thing when it comes down to it.

Wow, you went to some craziness to get this picture... D: I'm so glad there was no lasting damage to you or your camera!! It's a very beautiful picture, though. I'm really loving the unorthodox composition. Well done!

Thanks. It would not have been the first time either I or a camera of mine (it's amazing how tough they are) had plummeted from a cliff. Faulty risk-ometer I suppose. Nature photography is a hoot though.

Thanks. I think the reason I love photography is the all the problem solving that goes with it.

And HOW did you keep it steady when tied to your belt? Even if I'm barely touching my tripod my pictures get blurry during LE.

I know, right? I think a number of things helped. My belt is sort of stretchy so it absorbed some of my movement kind of like using a hand held bean bag. Also, in my day job I work in the Air Force in a combat specialty, we get lots of marksmanship training so I'm pretty good at holding still. Also, it's only a 1 second exposure, I tried the same thing with my IR camera at 1.3 seconds and the results weren't as crisp.

Indeed. I feel like I really missed the boat not getting into combat camera.
