Percy liked autumn weather, it was a welcome respite from the blazing summer heat, but near Maithwaite Station was a sight which always unnerved him. Near the station was an old mine which had been abandoned for many years after the lead deposits had dried up. The old buildings all remained standing tall; monoliths of brick and stone. Thomas had told him about a time when the mine was still open that a shaft had collapsed and trapped many workers, and that their spirits were said to haunt the site long after its closure. "I hope the signal is green so I can pass." Percy said to himself, but the signal was red. Percy waited patiently for the signal to turn green, and as he waited he heard a rumbling coming from nearby, and suddenly a chimney within the complex began to crumble and sink into the ground. Percy shuddered in fright, so much that he didn't see the signal turn green.
