"Another 'Improved' Sprite, guh! I waited all day for this?!" Yeah, I know. I've been releasing a lot of "improved" bases over the course of my Advent Calendar, but here's another one for Christmas minus 3 days.

The LNER B17s were designed as a group standard mixed traffic 4-6-0 by Sir Nigel Gresely for use on the weight restrictive former Great Eastern railway lines, though dealings with the North British Loco company in hopes that they would be contracted to build these engines meant that the engine's axle loading was 18 tons, making it heavier than what most GER lines could allow. Doncaster built 10 in 1928, then Darlington built 52 B17s from 1930 to 1936, followed by a batch of 11 built by Robert Stephenson and Co in 1937, bringing the class total to 73. They were popular with crews and enthusiasts alike, and became especially popular when they were named after soccer/football teams, giving them the name "Footballers." Two were given A4 streamlining for working the East Anglian Services. All of the class would last into BR ownership, being withdrawn between 1952-1960. No originals were preserved, but both a replica and a new build are in various stages of planning and construction.
