Description
The North Eastern Railway's development of the 4-6-0 mixed traffic engine culminated with the S3 class, also known as the B16. Seventy of these locomotives were built from 1919 to 1924 in 6 batches at Darlington Works. These were originally designed as 'fast goods' engines, but were more suited to mixed traffic duties on the East Coast Mainline, though the NER planned to electrify the ECML, but this didn't come to pass until the 1980s. They were three cylinder engines, built with many of the same parts as the C7 atlantics and the Q7 0-8-0 mineral engines. During the 1930s, Sir Nigel Gresley rebuilt number 2364 with Walshaerts valve gear on the outside cylinders and using his conjugated valve gear on the center, as well as other modifications and reclassified as B16/2, making the originals the B16/1. Edward Thompson then authorized the rebuilding of 16 more B16s to create subclass B16/3, from 1944 to 1949. Withdrawals began in 1958 and the last original B16s were gone by 1961 and the rebuilds lasting three years longer, going on into 1964 and none were preserved. During World War II, one B16, number 925, was destroyed in an air raid on the night of April 28-29, and was one of two casualties during a bombing raid by the German Luftwaffe on York, the other being A4 pacific number 4469, Sir Ralph Wedgewood.
