Description
It was a cool, late September night when Proteus was preparing to set off with some empty slate wagons bound for Crovan's Gate from the wharf. The driver placed Proteus' lamp over his smokebox as he prepared to leave."Can't forget my lucky lamp!" He said. The guard in the brakevan waved his green lamp, indicating that the train was ready, and Proteus puffed and chuffed out of the Wharf with his train. He puffed along with no problems until suddenly, Proteus' lamp flickered sporadically. It strobed for a few seconds then Proteus heard a 'pop' sound and everything within several dozen yards of him and the train went dark. Something like this had never happened before and it gave him reason to be very nervous. "My lamp!" He cried with dismay. "My lamp's bulb is out!" The driver had a plan to stop at the next signal. The signalman came out to see the driver.
"Proteus' lamp has failed!" The driver explained. "Do you have a spare lamp?" He asked.
"Come with me. I think I might have one laying around in here somewhere." The signalman answered.
"Alright. Fireman, take care of the engine." Said the driver.
"Right." Agreed the fireman. The driver went inside with the signalman to fetch a spare lamp while the fireman kept a close eye on all of Proteus' gauges as he simmered.
