When he finally did reemerge, the other engines had given him a peculiar nickname after Duke had told them all about his derailment.

"Smudger, I-I-I mean, Saul" The manager said, quickly correcting himself. "You will take the Horse and Cart today." He then spoke to his crew as quietly as possible. "He can't be trusted with passengers! Maybe this will do him some good."

"Don't worry. If anything happens it'll be no fault of ours." Said the driver.

"Thank you, gentlemen. I know this has been hard. Tell you what, how about I take the two of you for a pint one evening for your troubles these past few weeks?" The driver and fireman were most pleased with this arrangement.

"You'd best be careful, Smudger." Duke said as Smudger backed down onto the trucks. "I feel this may be your last warning." Smudger, however, was unconcerned with Duke, or anyone's comments for that matter. He was perfectly happy the way he was. The train which Smudger pulled, the Horse and Cart, was so named for how it was a slow goods service, setting down and picking up trucks at every station. The manager's thinking was that because of the relaxed schedule, Smudger would not have to rush. This, however, had the opposite. Smudger still was in a rush and became cockier still. There were frequent instances of spillages, damage to the rolling stock, and often, derailments.
