She jolted away, her head snapping up and away from Lawson's caress at the sharp and terrifying thought. Dread gripped her mind for a heartbeat more before she forced it away, clearing her throat with a shaky cough. Her features calmed with concentration so not to alarm him, and she looked up at his face, but she could not bring herself to meet his stare directly.

Then, the warmth disappeared. The spot where her body contoured into his filled itself with harsh, cold winter air. Surprised, his eyes shot open, glazed over for a moment before awakening from his stupor. It took him a moment to gather himself, calm his heart, before turning his head to peer at her with creased eyebrows, reamaining in his seated position. Unlike her, he was unable to mask the confusion on his features.

A heavy, bothersome weight pressed down on his back with each step. The white powder covering every inch of the ground wasn’t exactly helping matters. For the past few days, there seemed to be a permanent scowl on the Courser’s face, thoroughly defined by the scar beneath his chin. Combine that with the lackluster sheen in those golden eyes, it was clear with a simple glance the wolf was nothing short of miserable.
The reason for this self-torture?
His damn pride.
The Rah’at meeting had been weeks ago. Possibly more, he couldn’t quite remember, as the days blended together recently. The whole experience had rocked him to the core; words were exchanged, tempers rose, and lives were changed by a single event. He had gone against the group and demanded some punishment for Teva’s actions. It didn’t sit well with the more sympathetic souls in the circle.
